The theme for Homeless Persons Week this year is “Hidden Homeless” and focuses on four types of homelessness that we don’t usually see when walking around the city. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, domestic and family violence, staying with other households and Australians in housing stress.
Shane Rattenbury would like Canberrans to show their support during Homeless Persons Week, which is this week.

“Most people have an image of homelessness as being about older people sleeping rough on the streets. But for many Canberrans, that is not the whole story,” said Mr Rattenbury.
“The reality is that there is an ever growing population of Canberrans who are couch surfing, or staying with friends, with no long term housing options.
“The ACT Government is committed to helping those who are experiencing homelessness and has recently announced a joint initiative between the State and Federal Governments, called Common Ground.
“Common Ground provides permanent homes and the support to help disadvantaged Canberrans achieve stability and improve their lives.
The project will establish accommodation for up to 40 individuals or couples who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness, as well as creating more affordable accommodation options.
“This project will complement services provided by both the government and the community sector that seek to either prevent homelessness or support people who are experiencing homelessness.
