iTnews reports that Canberra’s fibre backbone TransACT is undergoing a major upgrade:

TransACT will add half a terabyte to its fibre network capacity as part of a network upgrade.

It would allow the Canberra utility to “support thousands more new services”, meet “ever-growing demand” and offer higher levels of service assurance, said chief executive officer Ivan Slavich.

It was expected to be completed by early next year…

Chief technology officer Wayne Bouffler said the company chose a “fully-managed 10G H-VPLS [Hierarchical Virtual Private LAN Service] edge” system from vendor Telco Systems for the upgrade.

H-VPLS fixed the scalability issues of VPLS, which allowed carrier-class services to be deployed over an Ethernet network.

Sounds like fun.

Given its a taxpayer funded entity wouldn’t they be better off extending their network to all Canberrans first ?

As a transact user, I can only wish it was taxpayer funded. Heck, even if they used tax money to install the network, you could at least half claim that. While some tax money might have been used a decade ago to start the business up, Ive no doubt its returning quite positive returns to govco, well, and its private shareholders.

The shareholders in TransACT Communications are (in no particular order):

ACTEW Corporation Limited
TVG TransAct Holdings SCA
Jemena ATA Pty Ltd
Prime Television Limited
MTAA Superannuation Fund (TransACT) Utilities Pty Ltd
Westscheme Pty Ltd
Australian Capital Ventures Limited

shadow boxer, the taxpayer is just an indirect shareholder in a commercial enterprise (and not even a majority one).

sorry, who owns Transact then, I thought it was intended for all of us ?

Must be a very small carrier!

The technology allows more subscriber to hang off the same copper wire.
But the copper wire itself has a bandwidth limit.

Hope the service doesn’t deteriorate by having too many customers hang off the one copper wire.
