High needs Canberrans costing a million dollars a year

The Canberra Times has a look at the predictably disfunctional social services system and discovers the staggering amounts being spent achieving not very much:

There is also an over-reliance on expensive “crisis” responses, by health authorities, police or social workers, driving up the cost of service delivery to vulnerable families. The research found that an unofficial system of service “rationing” had developed, resulting in families not being eligible for assistance until they reached crisis point and putting avoidable pressure on the front lines of the system.

Officials say that it is not unusual for more than $1 million worth of resources to be spent on one individual in a 12-month period.

You have to wonder how many of them could sort themselves out given a $250,000 wedge.

As my old Mum used to say, “penny wise and pound foolish”.

The services are overloaded and ill equipped. With mental health issues, the only way i could access help from these services was to be in a crisis situation. Unfortunately until then u either put up and shut up, go to extremely expensive therapies or lose the plot. I’m currently on a waiting list that goes on for a few months. I’m lucky that things are settled but I feel for those who are in less stable circumstances.

There is also a link between low social-economic people/families and high mental illness. The current system just cannot cope and with the poorly trained staff the people are at a loss.

“Officials say it is not unusual etc etc…” sounds a bit vague. Water cooler figures often take on a life of their own when a good story is to be had.

What an astonishing figure – and very worrying for a small jurisdiction, which tends to be a magnet, of sorts, for people from surrounding areas with less in the way of services. It would be nice to think that this process will eventually lead to more effective and (somewhat, one hopes) less financially costly outcomes.

Who could sort themselves out?

$250,000 wouldn’t make the schizophrenia go away in our household.. perhaps access to resources prior to reaching crisis point would certainly ease the situation and prevent “crisis” tho…
