The ABC has a story on the new Dyesol plant opening in Queanbeyan servicing the solar power industry:

“We’re the only people in the world who do absolutely everything and we supply the technology, the materials and the equipment to people, large companies, small institutions and academia who want to do research, prototyping data and manufacturing”

I had a long chat with one of the developers of this stuff recently at a business forum. Pretty interesting stuff, and highly useful. I get the impression they’re looking for investors at this stage. as full scale roll-out was apparently some time off when I spoke to them.

While we’re on sci-tech in Quangers, I understand there’s a company that has developed laser rays which operate from Mt Stromlo which literally zap space junk out of the sky. Anyone confirm? My source is a Commonwealth communications technology specialist so I’m fairly sure it’s not a hairbrained idea and is actually already operational.

Power always used to go out at Dyesol too. But we didn’t need a power outage to go to the pub.
The technology is still in its infancy in some respects, although it is promising in a BIG way. Good for “Quangers” to.
Cost $/W/year will be much better than silicon, etc. And more ubiquitous materials, cool looking panels too.

I hope the research materials this factory will provide will result in panels that can come close to being to being cost effective. They don’t yet exist. Massive subsidies exist. We would go back to the dark ages if all our electricity was being manufactured at present day cost of PV electricity.

The power always used to go out at EOS in Queanbeyan. Good time to go to the pub, especially if it went out on a Friday afternoon 🙂
Hopefully they decide to take peterh’s advice and upgrade.

Country Energy will be pleased, with their bank of panels nearby, they can possibly upgrade them to the newer panels – making them far more effective in power collection.

The other businesses that are calling queanbeyan home, National Fire Solutions & EOS, for example, will be able to leverage off this technology as well.
