Hiring a UTE and Credit Card Numbers

Hi All,

Not sure if this is the norm going ahead, however when you hire a ute from Mitchell, one needs to provide a credit card the details of which are written down on a piece of paper and stored on site.

I guess this will be quite a simple steal for any of the employees who work there !

Is there any law safe guarding the same? Credit card no on piece of paper , surely this is not safe.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Australia Post have nifty little cards that operate pretty much the same as debit cards (without the need to open an account). You buy them for (I think) about six or seven dollars and then load them up with however much you want to spend either across the counter at AP or via eft.

Could be the way to go to meet the rental mob’s requirements but not expose yourself to fraud.

I think this is what will be probably some thing like Debit Card, Will digg into it for sure.

Just get a throwaway credit card “gift card” (with $20) on it. If the numbers are stolen, then it’s not going to do them much good.

Back in the day of running credit cards through the old imprinting doodad, they would take an imprint of your card by way of deposit. This would get destroyed/discarded when the deal was concluded. Same thing going on here, just less official-looking.

There also used to be several layers of carbon paper with all that info on it just getting tossed aside.
Retail staff everywhere have always had easy access to credit card names/numbers/dates. I guess this is why they print other “security” numbers on the back.

Your credit card details are splashed around all over the place. You have to balance reasonable caution with getting on with your life.

Pretty standard car hire to have to provide CC details so they can bill you if you damage it or don’t fill the petrol tank after using it. probably not the most secure way of doing by writing details on a piece of paper but probably not a lot worse than using a computer. Got to have trust in employees until they prove otherwise, I’m sure they could just as easily get the numbers off the computer if they were that way inclined.
