Holy Grail owner ignorant of Downs Syndrome

I am totally outraged that Ian Meldrum the owner of the Holy Grail businesses was reported on page 3 of the Canberra Times today:

“You can’t have a Down syndrome person serving tables-as cruel as it sounds-because you can’t have someone dribbling saliva over people who are eating.”

Is this Ian guy for real or just drunk when he said that?

The place is a dump anyway. But with less patronage I should have a shorter wait for my food to arrive.

Pauline Hanson and her gang used to party there, so the Grail’s standards aren’t exactly high.

Guess where I won’t be going ever again.

I’ll join you for that bear Thumper. Then I’ll piss on the Grail

I never go to the Holy Grail so cannot comment on their employees but do note that some of the staff at La Porchetta seem challenged.

C’mon guys, 44 posts and not one reference to Molly. LTFU! :p

Deadmandrinking11:45 pm 02 Apr 08

Maelinar, read my posts first. I said, “all this does is highlight the ignorance of the general populace.” I don’t think this will have a major impact on his patronage one way or the other. Nobody reads the CT much anyway.

Another small fact that seems to have slipped under the radar is the reason for this lowlife’s court appearance. It seems he underpaid a number of workers and got caught out. At his last appearance he was ordered to make good these underpayments, and signed an order agreeing with the court’s findings. Now he doesn’t think he should pay what he said he would and has treated the whole episode as a bit of a joke.

I believe that there are enough other watering holes and feeding establishments in this town to satisfy the most fussy eater and drinker, that we should all just NOT go Holy Grails. Let this scum feel it where it hurts.

Holy Grail is a shithole anyway.

Cutting hair with blunt scissors…Nice.

Once again, it is lucky the majority of the posts do not agree with you, amazing how pig ignorant you are.

Actually, some people, most presumably the patrons of the Grail, do have bizarre and fickle perceptions of what they expect.

As I said before, this cheese is just representative of a bigger problem, don’t use all your energy shooting the messenger.

Nobody would ever enforce a hairdresser to cut hair with blunt scissors.

WMD, re your comment before directed at me, you know where you can stick it. Everybody else but you manages to understand my posts, this isn’t one of those crazy coincidences.

realityskin – your comment was not just NPC. It was just plain bizarre.
Why would someone with a disability make you lose your appetite?
You must have had very limited contact with ppl with disabilities.
Knowing that I share my community with ignorant ppl who are willing to make comments like you did, makes me lose my appetite. It makes me feel sick in my gut actually.

Deadmandrinking4:16 pm 02 Apr 08

Realityskin, you did use a derogatory term to describe a person with a disability. I think f-kwit is an appropriate term in this case.

DarkLadyWolfMother4:12 pm 02 Apr 08

Of course you can have an opinion, realityskin. Others can also have opinions about your opinions and your level (or otherwise) of fuckwittedness, wankery, fitness to breathe air and ability to wait on tables at the Holy Grail.

wtf, i can have a NPC opinion .. go take your box and jam it up your arse

Only if you were dying in a gutter by drowning in the dribble.

Actually, not even then…

hey now, that’s a bit harsh

realityskin you’re a fcuk wit and I hope you die in a gutter somewhere.

@ dalryk

Well, I’ll be darned … you’re correct! It seems Down’s Syndrome has been adopted by WHO in recent times, because they got sick and tired of people calling it Down’s incorrectly. They said, what the hell, let’s just chuck the “s” on the end of it and accept both Down and Down’s.

I read the article over a particularly delicious laksa at lunch.

Also in the article ‘His lawyer said he was being unfairly punished for “slackness” ‘

I think being punished for being knowingly half arsed about other peoples money in your own pocket is very far from unfair.

And maybe stung was commenting to my assessment of Meldrum, not Meldrum’s assessment of his employee.

The guy’s a knob. I’d be interested to read the article – just have to find someone who actually buys the CT since it doesn’t appear online…

Drunk most likely, probably behind the wheel again too.

Deadmandrinking12:49 pm 02 Apr 08

Sure, I’d be a bit worried if a blind crustacean started serving me food.

Someone with a disability, however, would be fine. They’ve still got to be able to do the work to get hired. Most people with Down’s Syndrome can.

Having just read the full CT article, I’d have to say Ian Meldrum sounds like a complete and utter f-wit. What a waste of space.

I dunno about anyone else, but i’d rather not be served a meal by a remo, kinda off putting, no ?

agree with all above about the farkwittedness of meldrum and resolve never to frequent h-g again, not that i’ve ever been a regular…

but did c/t article go on to correct the appaling misrepresentation in his comment, to the effetct that down’s syndrome does not involve people drooling on others’ food, etc? if not, whither the integrity of journalism these days – farking typical.

and stung, you’re a goose. ‘fair’, how? to whom?

Deadmandrinking11:55 am 02 Apr 08

I’ve worked with many people with down’s. I can safely agree with those on here who say they don’t dribble. The effects vary from person to person, but many whom suffer from this syndrome are capable and in some cases more capable of functioning than people without the syndrome in public places.

I also find Meldrum’s use of ‘down’ to fully describe someone with down syndrome offensive . Down Syndrome does not apply to every aspect of a sufferers personality. The person is not the syndrome. It’s kind of like calling everyone who wears glasses ‘visuals’ or something.

And Maelinar, all this does is highlight the ignorance of the majority. To those who say it’s ‘harsh but fair’ it’s umm….not exactly fair. Meldrum is suggesting that he discriminates against those with a syndrome acquired through no fault of their own. How, in any way, shape or form bar the abscence of a brain is that fair? How?

I will never drink, dine or do anything bar spit on the holy grail. Meldrum is a scumbag.

@ CanberraResident

“Down’s syndrome” is also correct.

Good on ya Wagons. This issue is particulary important to me as my brother has Down’s. I’m so sick of ignorant people!

Great idea AussieGal83! I might do the same.

I just wrote a long letter to the Anti-Discrimination Commission reporting this fool and his comments. I hope they investigate.

Meanwhile, I think I may send emails to all the pollies asking them to discontinue their patronage.

CanberraResident10:45 am 02 Apr 08

HHmm, this ar@e crack Meldrum has been in the news a lot lately. Front Page Saturday CT had a story about him getting a character reference from some politician for a drink driving court appearance.

BTW, it’s “Down” not Downs.

Karma will get Meldrum; I have no doubt.

“harsh but fair…”
WTF?
Do you even know anyone with Downs Syndrome? Cos the people I know who have Downs Syndrome certainly don’t go around dribbling everywhere.

barking toad10:29 am 02 Apr 08

And that’s just the pollies that binge there!

“…..you can’t have someone dribbling saliva over people who are eating.””

Maybe he should tell his patrons that: half of them are dribbling morons.

I don’t think it is a bigger ‘bias’ – you really have to be pig-ignorant to think that way. I also don’t think that many people love the Holy Grail – it is a cheap souless place that you drop into if other places are too full.

The customers he loses will be outweighed by the customers who continue their patronage. He’s just representative of a bigger bias – don’t shoot the messenger and all that.

What c*nt. I’m so going to throw eggs and dead fish at HG. Mother fucker!

harsh but fair ..

There’s a general antipathy to special needs people there, to be making such an ‘urban myth’ comment. Which is, of course, just as bad if not worse.

What a shallow fuckwit.

Yep, agree, will never go to the Holy Grail again. If the owner can be so ignorant and discriminative – he certainly cannot get his head around managing a decent business. Popping it straight into the Zefferellis category.

I think that this guy needs a little education..
I know where I won’t be eating from now on.

.. sounds reasonable to me.
