Homeless Brumbies real estate schemes collapse

Last season the Brumbies certainly looked like a team more intent on real estate deals than playing rugby.

Today the Canberra Times reports that the team’s plans to redevelop their training oval have been knocked back.

Apparently they now need to find a new headquarters, although whether that’s for training or redevelopment purposes remains unclear.

So we should be eternally grateful that the Brumbies choose to stay in Canberra. Like with GWS, we are the ones who are honoured by their presence – the ones who buy tickets, merchandise and memberships and in return are treated with contempt.

I love the Brumbies and I’ll be a member again this year. I also love the fact that there are lots of places where they could set up shop around ACT. If I were them I’d prefer to be in Griffith too but hey you only afford what you can afford without relying on the charity of others.

yeah – lets donate each Canberra public oval to a sports team, and they can all sell them off for units, and that will be great for sport in the ACT. Not.

So hundreds of thousands of rugby fans in the Southern Hemisphere are to be shafted because of a bunch of selfish NIMBYS and the loopy heritage lobby. One look at the run down, graffiti covered change rooms is enough to convince anybody that the area needs to be modernised. All I can say is thank goodness for the Melbourne Rebels because if we still had the Super 14 the Brumbies would now be seriously considering the Mexican option.

Another win for NIMBYs. I’m sure the Government can chuck in some money for a facility somewhere like the University of Canberra, the Uni would be interested in some free money for publicity and a facility.

Im sure the shareholders of the Brumbies can purchase a suitable facility for their business. Why should the community pay for a private business, as well as surrender public green space for no return.

A positive side effect of this scheme was the forming of another community council.

yes what this town really needs badly is another group of unelected “community representatives”

this one’s not really about NIMBYs. They weren’t objecting to the blocks of flats the brumbies wanted to build, but to the loss of the Oval.

and quite right too – who wants to live in a city of wall to wall tiny units, and not a blade of grass to be seen?

If you read today’s CT, it’s quite clear that many of the local residents want to move on to stopping the construction of the flats too. Stay tuned for that one.

You have to wonder how large the community is that will benefit from this sort of obstruction (to the construction of the flats – have no problem with saving the oval). NIMBYists have a wonderful lexicon, but so often the anti-development sentiment is little more than objecting to change. Gotta keep that view untouched for ever.

Yesterday’s development is today’s heritage.

I’m not a Griffith resident, but look at it this way.

The Brumbies took over a Bowling club that was going down the gurgler.

They maintained the greens for a couple of years, then decided they were excess to requirements and could be build over.

They then lay claim to the surrounding public playing fields, and demand to turn them private, and jam an extra 100 high density/profit houses in to the site.

All this from a team that dropped the ACT from their name years ago and threatened to move interstate. The arrogant private school boy bullies just got dacked.

Such good news for those of us who frequently enjoy the use of the lovely Griffith Oval..

perhaps they should concentrate on playing good rugby, and selling tickets and merchandise to make money. Rather than developing free land.

Could they move to Tralee?
