The opening today of the section of Horse Park Drive from Katherine Ave in Amaroo to Burrumurra Ave in Casey is the final major piece in the road network in Gungahlin, connecting to the Barton Highway and Federal Highway.

This section of road is an important part of the road network in North Canberra and will be a major timesaver for Gungahlin residents as well as those living in Belconnen and wishing to travel to Sydney, or connect to the Majura Parkway.

It will also reduce travel times for those who will soon be working on the provision of infrastructure for the new Gungahlin suburb of Moncrieff as well as being more convenient for those living in the suburbs of Casey, Jacka, Bonner, Amaroo and Ngunnawal.

The final section of Horse Park Drive has been completed both on time and on budget and is testament to the project team at Economic Development and the work of local companies Brown Consulting and SMEC.
Good infrastructure is vital to the continued growth of our economy and the ACT Government will continue its considerable investment in Canberra’s future.

Alongside the Gungahlin Leisure Centre and Gungahlin Enclosed Oval announced earlier this year, this milestone ensures Gungahlin has the infrastructure to meet the needs of its growing population.
Canberra has the best road network in Australia, and the ACT Government is committed to maintaining and
improving our network including significant funding of the upgrade of key intersections and transport corridors.

Ask and you will receive @watto23.
Sure looks like traffic light poles on the Fadden side of sternberg. I’m guessing they will be part time like at the Athllon-Drakeford roundabout.

The light poles at Sternberg you refer to face both directions so I am thinking these will be for pedestrians (and cyclists) only unlike the peak hour /part time one further south.
I think we are going to see some massive stacks following the changes at the roundabouts and the traffic lights “around the corner” will add to the excitement.

I just checked the light poles and you were correct in the first place. They only will regulate traffic from the east going into the roundabout.
(Should have gone to SpecSavers).

It will be interesting to see if these new part time traffic lights (if that’s what they are) will cause a bankup of traffic exiting Gowrie/Fadden around that small roundabout at Bugden/Sternberg.

I think that’s the objective- an attempt to stop people rat running through Gowrie/Fadden and moving them back on to Ashley/Erindale Drive

Re those same roadworks at the big roundabout, the turning lane east into Sternberg has been fully completed for almost a week but the barriers are still up. Makes no sense to me.

I’ll add something positive. I live in Casey and I absolutely love having this new bit of road! Though that first Saturday after it opened, I counted 5 dead roos on a 100 meter strip! Didn’t include the wallaby in the middle of my lane on Friday night, which I reported.

But since then, I’ve only seen 1 dead wallaby and I drive there almost daily now. I’ve even risked taking that road after dark.

Bonner is now my preferred place for grocery shopping and take away (I’d never even been to Bonner before) and I drive that way to the Inner North because it is so much more relaxed driving there than Gungahlin Drive/Barton Highway, even with only one lane.

Now I’m waiting impatiently for the Mirabei drive link to open, because that will greatly improve my drive into Gungahlin town and to Flemington road. Right now I rat race through Ngunnawal to get there…

If they would hurry up and build our local shops and get the bus going through our development, I might even consider staying here. Nah… just kidding.

It’s business as usual in the Territory for they insist on simultaneously starting multiple roadworks at a number of locations around town. The problem is, and always has been, that there are only a handful of road workers to complete the projects so obviously there are going to be delays…

There seems to be an abundance of people who have the skills to start roadworks in the ACT, but only two or three who are qualified to finish the work!

Well it’s not even close to being complete because they need to duplicate the road. All drivers will encounter now will be driving into peak hour congestion, which will increase as they stuff people into the new suburbs being built without adequate road infrastructure as they prioritise the land release over proper planning.

Don’t worry they’ll do it in about 20 years. Just look at Tuggeranong.

and when they do duplicate it, it will take much longer than planned. just look at the 200m duplication of Erindale Drive. already two months overdue with no end in sight

That’s just how we do things around here hence we have the world’s slowest roadworks not unlike the bureaucrats….

To be fair Drakeford drive was built as triple lane dual carriageway long before it was needed also.

The bit of work at Erindale drive won’t do anything. They needed to put lights in at the intersection with Sternberg.

So can you now do GDE -> Wells Station Drive -> Horse Park Drive -> Federal Hwy to get out of Canberra and so avoid congested Northbourne Av? GDE -> Sanford -> Morrisett -> Old Wells Station Rd was shorter, but seems to have been blocked off.

http://www.cmd.act.gov.au/open_government/inform/act_government_media_releases/edd/2014/temporary-closure-of-old-wells-station-road

So will horse park drive being complete ease the one lane fun that is Flemington road from far north Gungahlin traffic? Not sure what road they take to the city, Flemington has been terrible since old wells station closed as I guess a lot of people went around it.

Really? Buggeration. That would be because of the development of the caravan park next to EPIC. IIRC there was roadworks required at the intersection

Whats the problem – the toy train set will fix it………!

That’s why is being pushed through.

Great stuff, a necessary link to what is effectively a ring road. West Belconnen through Gungahlin to the Federal Highway is now a snap, well easier anyway.

“Canberra has the best road network in Australia”
(Thanks to the Dept. of Territories pre-ACT self government would have been appropriate so say, Andrew).
