During the ‘unprecedented’ year we all experienced in Canberra during 2020, lots of new words and emotions entered my vocabulary.
While the terms ‘lockdown’, ‘COVID normal’, ‘iso’, and ‘bubble’ sent me into a mild panic and had me endlessly doomscrolling (there’s another one) on my phone for information, I took comfort in other words and feelings, especially ‘community’, in all its shapes and sizes. The silent community of seeing the same people and dogs on my walk was a daily highlight, along with the resurgence of the local shops in Isaacs.
Since moving to the leafy southside suburb, I have made use of the beautiful cycling and walking trails full of lush pine forests and views over the Brindabella Ranges.
But when it comes to amenities, the suburb has long been lacking in a vibrant local retail district. The infrastructure is there, but aside from a handful of successful accounting offices, the shops mainly lay vacant.
The tipping point to revitalisation arrived in April 2020 when a family of entrepreneurial energetic siblings opened an IGA X-Press Plus Liquor. It was then followed in November by the opening of a new café.
SuperSweet Pastry fills a delicious buttery void in the space that was occupied by the monster burger creations of Soul Cartel. Owned and operated by two graduates of Le Cordon Bleu Patisserie in Sydney, they’re obsessed with making pastry and cakes more healthily.
From their humble kitchen, since opening, they have built a strong following, wowing locals with their small-batch signature croissants and Mille crepe cakes. Each creation is handcrafted fresh every day on-site using premium ingredients while tweaking the traditional French recipes to use less sugar and butter.
The results are flaky, delicate croissants with hundreds of layers revealed in the first crunchy bite, spectacular chocolate croissants, an inventive decadent tiramisu danish, a colourful fruit danish and much more besides.
There are currently five rotating flavours of the Mille crepe cakes on offer: Rose Vanilla, Matcha, Chocolate, Mocha and Passionfruit, and Lemon. Each is a visual treat, with nearly 20 layers of crepes interspersed with layers of cream in between.
Despite this, the cake is surprisingly light, and a piece makes the perfect accompaniment to a cup of Kingswood coffee. The beans used are the signature milk blend sourced from Sydney, chosen for their rich chocolate tones and caramel sweetness.
Doing my bit for community building and supporting local, I have been dropping into SuperSweet Pastry every week. Along with the enjoyment of the pastries and coffee, it has been great and, dare I say, heartwarming to see it full of people enjoying the simple pleasure of a visit to the local shops.
