ACT Policing has arrested a 35-year-old man for numerous property offences after a pursuit through parts of NSW and the ACT overnight (Friday, December 9).

Around 12.50am, an ACT Policing patrol spotted a red Mazda 121 sedan with NSW plates driving along Majura Road in Majura. The car and driver matched descriptions provided from NSW Police after an attempted aggravated robbery at a service station in Sutton.

Police attempted to perform a traffic stop on the car, which failed to stop and a pursuit commenced along the Monaro Highway and through Queanbeyan via Lanyon Drive. Police deployed road spikes at the intersection of Hindmarsh Drive and Canberra Avenue, which deflated the Mazda’s tyres and ended the pursuit.

The pursuit lasted a total of 13 minutes, and reached a maximum speed of 140km/h. Police checks revealed the car was reported stolen from a burglary in Red Hill on Tuesday, and police also found a large kitchen knife on the front passenger seat.

The arrest of the man was the result of a collaborative ACT Policing and NSW Police response, and included members from both North and South District General Duties patrol and Police Operations.

It may be just me but I find it quite odd that a car stolen from Red Hill during a burglary (a house break-in, not just a stolen car) was stopped by the ACT police due to a NSW police alert. I am intrigued as to why there was not an ACT police alert out for this car.

Why do you think there wasn’t?

Based on the fact that there was no mention of one in the AFP media release. Quite happy to be wrong on this though.
Just peaked my interest that a car stolen from Canberra was only stopped because the NSW police wanted it.

Actually, the word is “piqued”, not “peaked”. A common mistake.

So was he from Quangers or the ACT?

I’m not fussed really, as long as he ends up in the AMC. Aggravated robberies with knives are not to be tolerated.

They don’t weigh much. Quicker than you might think. Zoom zoom!

Spot on! Mrs Poindexter could pedal her pregnant-rollerskate shaped 121 pretty quick. Nothing upsets a white Commodore driver more than getting done off the line by a 121 at a set of lights.

Wow, many years ago I used to have a red mazda 121. Never had THAT much fun with it, though!

Get away cars are usually the ones that are easiest to steal. My mate had his bubble car stolen and used for burn outs on the local oval. Where it expired. It also gets near the top of the worst car to be in when crashing list.

They got a Mazda 121 up to 140 km/h? I don’t remember Majura Rd having such a steep downhill section.

Seriously, what did this guy expect when using a Mazda 121 as a get away vehicle. I expect that after the guy way arrested it took the coppers a good 15 minutes to stop laughing at him.
