How bad is the High Court?

The SMH has a snippet on how some of the dispersed High Court justices are settling into palatial digs in Sydney’s Queens Square Law Courts.

Of more interest was the mention of the scale of works required to fix the relatively new building:

Weakness in the foundations of the Canberra building is causing the forecourt to sink into the earth, and the building has also suffered from a leaky roof and windows.

Let’s hope they get it right this time.

Why don’t they just build the Leaning Tower of Canberra and get it over with?

More to the point, how bad is official architecture?

We have two buildings next to each other, the High Court and the National Gallery, that are two of the more recent major national institutions yet have proved to be inadequate and “unfit for purpose” in two decades!

At least they’re still standing, unlike the Silverton Centre in Moore St, that had to be evacuated and demolished after it began sinking into the earth a few years after being built!

ah. that was its name. good old underground river. surprised that they rebuilt, but, from memory, the amount of concrete used was absolutely mindblowing.

I thought you were referring to Michael Kirby, former High Court justice who was beyond criticism lest you be called a homophobe

Still the best example of brutalist architecture in Australia. A wonderful building that suffers from the same blight that every other building in canberra suffers from, bad workmanship. I don’t know one person’s house that hasn’t got cracks in the walls or other problems due to poor building practices that are allowed to continue.
