How can I get ADSL in Chifley?

The short version –>

iPrimus got connected (believe uses Optus network) – took five minutes to load Gmail inbox page (discontinued the service).

iiNet connect a phone line via Telstra tech for ADSL – two days later received a text that the property is too far from exchange/too much loss can not continue to connect ADSL.

Netspeed longreach wireless – Installer says no line of sight from premises to any of their dish/services, trees in the way and hill (Mt.Taylor).

Has anyone connected ADSL in Chifley or do I have to move?

Need connection for external uni course.

Thank you.

Apologies, my post was meant to say ‘4g average’ not ‘4g max’ Reference (although dated) is here:

http://m.smh.com.au/digital-life/mobiles/australias-4g-networks-the-fastest-in-the-world-20140220-3350n.html

Like Lazy I said, you’re a long way from the exchange a_jacob. Your exchange is indeed DKIN (not Mawson) – check http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/ .. Some people in Chifley may be able to get ADSL but it’s not suprising that others – like yourself – can’t.

As f4te and others have suggested, iiNet / TransACT VDSL2 is available at most residences in Chifley and is typically fast (anywhere from 30/3 to 80/20Mbit) and reliable. Again, see http://www.iinet.net.au/internet/broadband/vdsl2/

gazket – plenty of people on ADSL2+ get 24Mbit (or even a bit faster) on copper as long as several hundred metres. I suggest that if you really have an 11Mbit sync speed then either you have a line fault, the line takes a very long way around to get next door, or you don’t actually live next to the exchange.

4G from all 3 providers is capable well over 100 Megabits/sec, and I have personally seen 130Mbit on Optus 4G (using CA on band 40.) Yes, most people will see a lot slower than that most of the time. Yes, it’s too pricey for decent amounts of data transfer.

Getting back to the original topic of this thread, we’re in the Chifley area and have (we assume) ADSL. Whilst it is slow at times, what’s the best way to test it’s speed and what sort of speeds should we be looking for with ADSL2, VDSL2, 3G/4G or whatever?

http://www.speedtest.net/

ADSL2+ is max theoretical of around 20Mbps. With distance from the exchange and age of the infrastructure I think you are doing well at 2+Mbps reliable in Chifley. With VDSL2, I have friends getting 40+ Mbps in Chifley, and it’s far more reliable.. this depends on your proximity to the Transact nodes.

4G max is about 24Mbps, you will probably see 10 to 20, but this can vary dramatically and you will pay for it.

I have had ADSL 2+ and now have VDSL2. VDSL2 is much faster and more reliable.

I can get up over 4 Mb/s with VDSL2. It was less than half that with ADSL 2+ with drop offs.

3G/4G is nowhere near either and horrendously expensive.

My VDSL2 plan with Grapevine is the cheapest deal I can get. ADSL 2+ did however get me free calls throughout Australia.

I get 6Mbps on ADSL2 and over 10Mbps on 4G. As several people have mentioned 4G is too expensive for recreational streaming but will get your assignments submitted.

ADSL is marketed as 20mb but you will never get any where near 20mb. I live next door to a phone exchange and get 11mb.

Get a 4G hotspot on the biggest plan you can while you wait for a cable solution. They are ok.

unless you want to do anything beyond browsing, then you’ll see some lovely excess usage charges very quickly. My 4G is quicker than my ADSL (and I live 100m from the exchange), no chance I’d consider touching it for daily use with how much data HD streaming uses.

According to the Liberals and all the other IT experts in Foggy Hollow, we should all be on high speed wireless by now.

That not working for you?

Strange!

The other IT experts you are referring to of course were Messrs Rudd and Conroy who dreamed up the NBN on the back of a drink coaster.

Give me a drink coaster solution over a non-solution anyday!

Wonder where the Libs dreamed theirs up?

Looks like it came with a cardboard roll down the middle.

Labor left a lot of paper and cardboard lying about when the were booted out by Abbott.

Labor booted itself out.

And Abbott lied and lied and lied so people would still vote for him despite Labor’s self destruction.

Labor are/were a bunch of hacks.

The Libs aren’t much better, but at least they don’t squabble in public like Kev and Jules did.

The ADSL exchange for Chifley (and the rest of Woden) is at Mawson. I’m in Pearce and when I was connected in 2001 I was told that I was just within the serviceable area for ADSL. It seems a bit silly that there is apparently no ADSL exchange at Phillip to service Chifley (and probably Lyons and Curtin as well).

Chifley is actually off the Deakin exchange (http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/viewexchange.php?Exchange=DKIN) and the lines into the area are very long, hence the reason many in the suburb can’t get ADSL.

VDSL2 using iinet or via TransACT providers should be available and should be much faster than ADSL would be.

Chifley is the last south suburb serviced by the Deakin exchange, it does not use the Mawson exchange like Pearce, which is why ADSL speed in Chifley is so bad.

Transact VDSL2 is your only real wired option (if you want speed) , with 3G/4G the other fallback.

I had a family friend have the same experience getting it set up.

Meh. They’re politicians too, don’t get me to defend them. Their mistake was to underestimate and oversell a huge and technologically fundamental but ultimately necessary change,

The necessity was to get off the ageing and outdated Telstra monopoly copper in the monopoly The Telstra monopoly the Liberals set up at the consumers expense. The almost limitless capacity of fibre optics in an open Public network was a bleedin’ obvious move.

The Liberals obviously don’t have Blind Freddy on their side and are currently getting away with the same or worse progress, at virtually the same expense, for a totally crap result.

All they needed was to chant the magic words: “Im no scientist, but…”

You just cannot go an plonk an exchange in another location to fix things. For one you would need to have sufficient back-haul copper to do so which isn’t cheap or easy.

One solution is putting RIM’s into the street, but then people would complain because all you would get is Telstra ADSL or Telstra resold.

The solution to the issue is run a complete new system, lets call it the NBN, but been stuffed up big time by the Liebrals on the big hill.
