How did you cool off today?

What a stinker.

Spent most of the arvo in prol soup, aka the local public swimming pool, dodging kiddy turds and wondering what foot fungus I’ll get this time.

Not too sure how high the UV index got, but the dirt bag index was in the ‘extreme’ range. (A dirt bag rating is calculated by multiplying a person’s number of missing teeth by their tattoos.)

Then calmed down with G&Ts sitting about a foot away from the portable air cooler at home.

Errgggghhhh.

Icy cold Coke and an air conditioner. And the giant freezer at work, of course.

Has the watermelon been macerated with vodka?

Woody Mann-Caruso9:16 pm 02 Feb 09

BoM says it’s going to be 39 on Saturday – then 23 on Monday. I recommend a big bowl of chilled soba noodles, followed by watermelon, all washed down with lots of wheat beer.

Ngunnawal shops (Non Platypus ones) sell Monaco Bars as well – I also discovered that they are my closest bubble o bill pusher – Man Bubble O Bills kick Monaco Bars arse the whole way around the freezer section IMO.

…and the Shell servo in Belco has them.

Good luck with the experiment, NoAddedMSG! I’m a great believer in experiments. They’re fun and often informative. You might invent something truly superlative!

Whats with the anti tattoo sentiments?

I guess everyone who has a tattoo is now a dirtbag by default, including myself.

Thank you very much….

At least mine was designed by me, and NOT a southern cross.

I have nothing against people with tatts, I just think they look like poop, unless of coure they’re written with Asian symbols.

Whoo! I am going to have a bit of an experiment tonight though, I’ll try making a sugar syrup from equal parts lemon juice and sugar and then putting a load of seriously crushed mint in it. I also have a bottle of strawberry cordial which I have been a little uncertain what to do with (it’s not so nice on its own) so I’ll try adding a lot of mint to some of that.

Here’s hoping it works better than my last experiment (honey roasted cashews) which I ended up feeding to the ants.

I’m putting in another request for the mint cordial recipe, please Granny!

I’m working on it, NoAddedMSG! We’ve fired off an email. I may even start a cordial recipe thread.

: )

I smeared my naked body in ice-cream and had Swedish lesbians lick it off.

I thought it was a gardening term used by salts of the earth.

It’s a medical term, used, I believe, by doctors and nurses in casualty.

Tatto X Missing tooth = Dirtbag

shame that the “dirtbags” I saw at the erindale pool all had teeth and no tats. typical lowlifes though, jumping into the kiddie’s pool and scaring the kids. didn’t seem pleased when confronted by a couple of angry dads, me included. perhaps they buggered off to tuggeranong pool.

I’m just so happy to hear that Monaco Bars are back!

I would start somewhere with infusing several hundred grams of mint leaves with a sugar syrup – maybe add some whole cardamon and star anise for some subtle variances ?

A splash of vanilla extract?

I’m putting in another request for the mint cordial recipe, please Granny!

Spent the weekend working on a no-budget film shoot in a house with no air-conditioning. So basically we went outside into the 38 degree heat to cool down 😛

I had a premolar taken out.

Guess that makes me a dirtbag by definition.

Good thing I care less about strangers opinions of me.

We basically bunkered down inside the house over the weekend, where it has been lovely just with the ceiling fans ticking over.

Had to venture out Saturday arvo to get more landscaping materials and that was ugly. Sunday morning out in the yard and in the garage building stuff was fine. But the cool change Sunday arvo was great and very welcome.

Danman the radar showed that weather was out near Mt Ginnini but really wasn’t very deep and didn’t move. Made for a spectacular sunset and put the arvo sun out a bit earlier though.

I turned the ducted heating onto full blast.

Cos it was as sure as hell cooler than the outside temperature! Phew!

>A dirt bag rating is calculated by multiplying a person’s number of missing teeth by their tattoos.

So if someone has lots of tattoos but perfect teeth, their dirt bag rating is zero? That can’t be right.

Well, tonight is a cool change of sorts, with that excellent easterly that’s been blowing all day bringing some lovely cool (moist) air in . I’ll get to the low teens tonight, awesome.

Sorry about your nan, grunge_hippy.

They’ve brought back Monaco Bars!! Yippeeeeeee!

: D

bring back eskimo pies i say! but i am glad for the return of the monaco bar. very nice.

spent the day drinking beers with my family, remembering my nan who passed away this morning. followed by several water fights to cool off… but we needed it! too much sadness on such a hot day.

bring on the cool change!

Snap. I had one too yesterday, still great. Triple Treats should be next.

.

Air con…

Got a nice surprise to find that they’ve finally brought back MONACO BARs! Best.icecream.ever.

I’d imagine that Broomball(ice hockey without skates) on Sunday morning at Phillip (melted) ice rink would be like watching slapstick comedy.

6ft round concrete pipes used for stormwater have great air conditioning qualities. If its deadset sunny and no chance of rain – find one that opens up to a canal, and in the shade and sit in the canal with a cool 18 degree earthy breeze an have a yarn with ya mates.

I cooled off at a mates in Yass – followed by heading up to the grave yard from 9ish to 11 ish.

Huge polished granite slabs are great for lying down on and cooling off… jk folks.

By the way – there was a supercell on the south horizon last night… Anyone know what that was about ?

I can’t hear anything about Earth hour for all the noise of the Aircon and television!

We’ve had the aircon on for three days straight, and we’re sleeping under it in the lounge! We’ve also had the window shutters down for two weeks; so the TV and puter is our only contact with the outside world (except for me, who has to go to work, where it is so cold I have to wear a jumper!).

smee with you. 3 A/Cs now turned to to 25.

What is this Earth Hour rubbish?

I just realised it’s coinciding with a festival I’m going to down near Bega: http://www.thebegavalley.org.au/candelovillagefestival.html

I wonder if everyone’s going unplugged for an hour.

Woody Mann-Caruso2:59 pm 01 Feb 09

I’m sure I could get you the recipe if you are interested.

Yes please!

I’ve just found something in the back of a cupboard: circa 1980’s ice cream maker. It’s going in the freezer right now, so I can make sorbet with the kids tomorrow (and frozen mint juleps tomorrow night).

Your right. i’ll crank it down to 18

25 ? Thats a bit warm isn’t it ?

smee with you. 3 A/Cs now turned to to 25.

We crank on the aircon around 11am and set it to 25 before the house has a chance to heat up too much. We also switch on the fans to the rumpus room and computer room (no aircon outlets in there yet…). With 37 outside it hits a max of 27 inside (30 or so in the computer room with all the extra heat generated there).

Airconditioned house, airconditioned cars, airconditioned work… What is this nature thing you speak of?

And damn, but I’ve never had a mint julep! I’m having one today. This very day!

Woody Mann-Caruso said :

homemade mint cordial

Oooh – recipe? Or is that a code for ‘mint julep, double bourbon’?

No, it really was cordial! I’d never had it before, but Gramps’ cousin has 100 acres of land he’s just purchased out near Goulburn.

A friend brought some along, but they apparently make it all the time as well. It was very refreshing actually.

I’m sure I could get you the recipe if you are interested.

Kids have been sleeping in the kitchen all week as it’s the only air-conditioned room in the house. Had a BBQ last night with the neighbours. Cooled down over several bottles of home-brewed beer.

Aircon on 17 does the job !

Pommy bastard10:32 am 01 Feb 09

I sat in front of a portable air conditioner at the office.

Mint julep…mmmmmmmm

Woody Mann-Caruso9:15 am 01 Feb 09

I single-handedly drained the dam with my evaporative aircon and opened the last bottle of homemade lemon cordial.

homemade mint cordial

Oooh – recipe? Or is that a code for ‘mint julep, double bourbon’?

I made a big batch of Mango and Lime Sorbet which went down a treat with the fam-billy! Even the doglets approved. 🙂

The end of next week is looking promising although this far out anything can happen. We were never slated to get a cool change, although today’s forecast of 37c has been dropped to 34c, and it looks like storms are going to try forming for the next few days. Hope they do.

The current blustery SE wind up here is bringing some relief, maybe that’s what’s going to see off the old high of 37c.

I skulked in my house, dunked the dogs in a bucket of water whenever they got too hot, and dreamed of Utah. Must pack.

Sepi the ice rink is a nice place to be on a hot day except for one thing. The ice melts a little and you get a layer of water about 5 mil deep. If you fall, which most beginners do, you get drenched.

After realising that my little heater doesn’t double as a non-heating fan blower, and realising that my housemates were all at home for the afternoon, I took off down to the Front Cafe for a few hours of solid work, albeit under a strong fan and with a couple of Pale Ales.

Singing out in the open in the ANU union forecourt as the sun went down this evening was just superb, followed by a couple of beers outside Tilley’s to cap off the evening.

As I drove back past the ABC studios in Dickson at about 11pm, the temperature reading said 27 degrees. Apparently now 26.8 degrees now nearing midnight.

Wow, I thought we were going to get a cool change with the rain expected tomorrow, but no, no maximums (maxima?) forecast for < 30 for the next week.

Ruby Wednesday11:45 pm 31 Jan 09

Drank half a bottle of wine. Took a siesta with an ice pack on my neck. Sat under the ceiling fan googling air conditioning–definitely have to look into that before next summer, I think!

Loitered in Belco fish markets.

Oh, and also had a G&T as well as homemade mint cordial.

I went swimming in a dam with the cool mud between my toes.

: )

I was ever so fortunate (insert globs of sarcasm) enough to play pretty much a full game of soccer (sorry lads football) and not die from heat exhaustion, sun stroke, or making an a$$ of myself by stuffing up too much.

Currently I have discovered that an esky full of icy water is perfect therapy for my somewhat red and sore and hot and blistered feet which are being weak as pi$$ over pre season.

I love summer by the way and deliberately find huge swathes of rainforest to deforest and then blow up mountains so I can burn all the shiny rocks in them in the vain hope that during my own lifetime we will only ever have winter in July and only for a day and the minimum will be 20.

I’ve been wondering if Phillip Icerink still exists – or is it now a skyscraper.

Iceskating might be nice on a hot day.

Funny, I’ve just calmed down with a G&T too. With frozen blueberries instead of ice cubes.
My pre-school kids like to get a plastic tub in the kitchen and play “washing the baby” with their dolls.
Making frozen yoghurt ice pops.
Absconding to the homes of friends/family who have air con.
I’ve discovered our garage is the coolest room in the house, so may move in there if it’s too hot to sleep at nights.
