graph of stupidity

So above is a screenshot of the most googled terms by web users in the ACT.

Yes. People googling Facebook, unable to type “.com” for themsleves.

Followed by “youtube”, and then.. then… the horror… canberrans searching google for google.

I despair.

UPDATE: Thanks to Mr Waffle for pointing me at this video:

witty people are trying to find GOOGLE on google. It is like trying to find your phone by switching on the flashlight of your own phone with your own phone :p

I was surprised to see the Canberra Times listed among the rising searches – but not Riotact. Looks as though there’s life in the old girl yet …

Trending up off a very low base ifiled. A peak on Sunday of 100 searches. (click the linky)

On the other hand yesterday alone 500 people googled “Riot ACT”, 428 googled “riotact”, 145 googled “the riot act”, 83 googled “riot act canberra”, and there’s about ten other variations all with similar numbers.

Actually, how dumb is the person that wrote this post? Those are “search terms” dimwit. They are the individual words or word groups (ie: quoted words) that people use in their searches. Facebook is probably at the top because lots of people search for “facebook my ex-girlfriend who I want to stalk”. You tube would be up there because a lot of people search for “youtube cats doing funny shit”.

Personally I search for google services and documentation a lot, such as “google c2dm” so I’ve contributed to increasing the ranking of Google as a search term.

Nice work though. I applaud your balls out attempt to be superior.

Oops. Someone’s feelings were hurt.

I think they are actually search phrases. Because of how “facebook login” appears at #7

And anyhow, they would be better off searching for: “my ex-girlfriend who I want to stalk” site:facebook.com

If you are right, then I am amazed that more people search for “facebook + something” or “youtoob + something” then search for “something + wiki” which I know I do all the damn time.

My mum types the web address into the search bar quite often.

She also double clicks (or even triple clicks) on web links too.

She can’t be trained not to. The knowledge only remains in her head for about a minute and then she double clicks or whatever again.

Lobsters mum must be a gold fish 🙂

To be fair, some people who have gone and installed a plethora of toolbars and search addons, generally their search box can look more distinct than the address bar.

It does make you wonder how many people are typing in ‘westpac’ and what happens when a phishing site gets a higher page rank than the legitimaet site, for example.

Hence the problem with allowing users to search so easily from the address bar without making it obvious whats happening.

Have teenage boys stopped using the internet?

like they need to search for “that” now – dedicated sites etc

That is pathetic! I cringe for these poor souls.

Dodgy figures I reckon, who searches Goolge for Google…

That would be someone who wants to break the internet:

Like the others, I suspect it’s people typing the words into their address bar, and hitting search rather than go, then google logs it as a search.

Searching google for google – isn’t that how the interweb get’s broken? It’ll make it implode!!!!!!!

“Yes. People googling Facebook, unable to type “.com” for themsleves.”

*snerk*

Dodgy figures I reckon, who searches Goolge for Google, that said typing facebook directly into a google toolbar is less clicks/keystrokes than typing .com and enter.

At my work (public service) Allhomes is always in the top three for some strange reason

Yes, what ThatGuy said. Also, if you make a typo in the URL, it’ll Google instead.

I think judging people so easily is dumb.

Google makes the cursor default into the search bar after the page loads. I’ve seen people (yes me too) think they’re typing in the address bar only to find they’re googling it instead.

Whether that proves or disproves them being dumb….

Many browsers have a unified search & address field – does the search term results take that into consideration?

Bookmarks have been around for a long time people. Plus (at least in my experience with firefox) if you type just the name of a popular website, it directs you automatically to said website.
