How many emails does it take to fill in a hole?

sandpit

An interesting bunch of correspodence out of Territory and Municipal Services on turning the skate bowl into a sandpit released under FOI.

Does anyone know what’s gone on down there at the Kambah playground?

UPDATE 01/10/12 18:23: Thanks to Threepaws for sending in pictures of the new sandpit some distance from the hole, and the safety issues of the skate pit.

I remember when we first came to Canberra at the beginning of the 80s and using this facility.

Considering alot of the playground was redesigned a decade ago, its good to see it survived this long in these days of ‘Soccer Mums’ and political correctness.

Thanks so much to whoever got this released under Freedom of Information. We were planning to hold an event here, so its good to know this. As far as I’m aware there was no consultation with the Skateboarding Community or the Canberra Skateboarding Association about the u-pipe being filled in.

Thanks for the petition, Vagabond. Definitely worth saving, but worth improving the safety of the area too.

Put a charity bin beside it. The hole will be filled in no time.

This place was one of the first skateboarding facilities in Canberra and it has a very rich history. It would be a shame to see it go.

They have also recently installed an in-ground sandpit, which I thought was a little strange seeing as it will most likely only be used as a litter tray for wandering cats.

Very likely. Got rid of our sandpit at home because every cat in the street was soiling it.

This is the first that I have heard of any of this, was there any public notification?

Wow holy crap memories. Used to play in those as a young kid.

That would be a fun sandpit – see if you can dig down to the bottom!

Ahh yes, the sketchy old Kambah bowl. The few that could ride it well were of ye-olde 80’s ilk and like gods to us… I can remember having a crack at it several times in the late 80’s/early 90’s only to come off second best. The transitions were way too sharp and with no flat whatsoever there was no time to keep control.

I remember slamming so hard one time, flat on my back I could hardly walk out of there. Good thing I drank lots of milk and ate lots of cheese as a kid or else I probably would have been taken away on a stretcher also.

The Woden bowl and vert ramp were way better!

I’ve just sent through a few shots of the skate bowl as it is now.

I recently saw a paramedic in the bowl attending to a teen who had broken his leg. The teen was on a stretcher sucking on one of those green painkiller sticks while they waited for the firies to turn up and winch them out, because hey, that bowl wasn’t designed with stretchering someone out of it in mind! It is quite steep and the only two ways out without calling the fire brigade are those rungs made from reo bar, or the step where you get in (if you can reach it).

I can’t believe they haven’t filled it in before now to be honest. The park itself and all of the equipment (bar the skate bowl) are kept in such good condition, the toilets are well maintained and they have just installed lovely new BBQs. They have also recently installed an in-ground sandpit, which I thought was a little strange seeing as it will most likely only be used as a litter tray for wandering cats.
