How to blow $140,000 on internet chat sites?

The ABC has an astonishing story on Anglicare’s Canberra and Goulburn accounts department employee Ian Gordon Stubbings, 39, who’s going been sentenced to four years in prison for defrauding his employer.

Alarming enough is that a charity can pay out $140,000 in expense claims to an employee over two years without noticing anything is amiss, or maybe having a chat with him about his expenses. (Frankly it confirms my darker suspicions about NGOs).

But somehow he’s managed to spend the money on “internet chat sites”.

By my maths if he’d headed down to a knocking shop for a relatively pricey $500 a throw (heard stories, read books) he’d have been able to go three times a week. (leaving aside the discounts I have heard regular high paying customers can get).

I mean, I like the internet and all, but has a lazy $140k ever been spent more worthlessly?

Ian’s been ordered to pay back $138,000.

I worked with Stubbings, from the outside he seemed like an OK sort of guy, but the real interesting thing about it all is his mother “Barbara” stiil works there. I don’t understand how she can do that pretending that nothing happened, off the pixies I reckon!

” (heard stories, read books) “

Ew.

I reckon he’ll have a right arm like a blacksmith, poor eyesight, and walk with a limp.

(Though a limp what, I don’t think John would allow.)

Sites like… well, I can’t actually say their names. But they advertise late at night promising to hook up singles. A couple of these sites were recently in the news because of fake profiles and employees pretending to be people in chat rooms. Courts slugged them with some huge fines. I would think the users who were defrauded were punished enough by the embarrassment of learning that 20 something “Sarah” was really a 30 something IT tech in Bangalore named Raj 🙂

four years is quite a lot when career burglars seem to get weekend detention.

The new acting judge from NSW Sepi. Seems to do things faster and harder.

wow. how can you spend that much?

Should join okcupid 😉 At least it’s free!

I thought he was employed as an accounts officer or something? in which case it was probably easier for him to cover up his crime than most employees would have.
