How to find a singer?

I’m just wondering what method of advertising for a singer (or other muso, for that matter) has met with the most success for RiotAct-ers lately.

My covers band has recently become singerless and we’re keen to keep things going, so we’re putting the word out there in whatever ways we can think of. AllClassifieds looks good, and we’ve posted on there. We’ll also post flyers in the music shops and so on.

Are there any other methods that have worked particularly well for you?

And here’s the ad (just in case RiotAct is one of the answers I’ll be getting) :-

SINGER WANTED for established covers band.Gigs are waiting, so experience is highly desirable. We might trade this
for talent and potential if the right candidate comes along.
We enjoy every gig, and we want the audience to have a party too. We’re a
4-piece (guitar, bass, drums … and you of course) playing energetic rock ranging from the 60s to last week – from Creedence, Led Zep, the Beatles and the Police to the Killers and Franz Ferdinand, with just about everything in between.

We’re Aussie enthusiasts too – Grinspoon, You Am I, Angels, Hoodoos and Pete Murray to name a few.

We’ll practice hard together once we find someone, because we want to get
out there and play! Give us a call (0407 884194) if you’re interested.

Fnaah, any details on possible bass gig? Could be a goer…

Thanks, Thumper – time I caught up with him! (And for reference, I was the *good* singer… and working a reasonable amount, now, too)

Maybe try putting up notices at music stores and suitable live venues where they allow it?

Sounds good fnaah. Buy me a bass and I’ll be happy to join your band 🙂

Thumper! I used to sing in an amateur 7-piece with your guitarist – he’s an absolute legend. Seriously good. Did a sort of Mark Knopfler thing with the volume knob in his instrumentals that made my knees buckle. I will be looking out for your gigs.

Suggest you put up a notice at the Canberra School of Music for a keyboard player, or at the Canberra Jazz Blog, where I think you’ll find the right sort of muso. (And if you ever need female vocals, Mark may remember me!)

Rock/grunge/alternative. Think “guitar hero” setlists. 😉

Fnaah; Thumper – what genre music? Can possibly help you with jazz or classical!

Try the bulletin boards at Better Music. Anyone looking at them will be an actual muso, which has to help. In fact, ask the guys an Better Music who they’ve sold a decent mic to lately.

I thought, in this day and age, to find a singer you just had to start a reality TV show. I understand the budgets required might be a bit high for the average covers band, but maybe you could start out at Garema Place under the big screen until your audience builds!

While we’re on the subject, are there any bass players out there looking for a similar gig?

Try fasterlouder.com.au They have a Canberra forum and there are often posts asking for new band members. I was going to do the same thing. I’m a guitarist and want to create an originals band playing music similar to Karnivool, Cog, Tool, Dead Letter Circus etc. I need to recover my gear from my parents place first.
