Where to Find Vintage Fashion in Canberra

Retro is in – it always has been!

I grew up watching classic films from Hollywood’s golden era (circa late 1920s to 1960s). Seeing style icons like Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelley and Joan Crawford on the screen as a little girl has not only influenced my career as a personal stylist but also a huge percentage of my wardrobe choices.

Reasons to shop vintage:

  • Get the look of iconic film goddesses. If you’re a lover of the silver screen like me, it’ll be your pleasure to wear pieces that are reminiscent of the people who captured that era so beautifully through film. You will have a unique personal style.
  • Vintage clothing usually last decades. Unlike many of the modern clothes made today that fall apart after the first wash or wear, vintage clothes have already stood the test of time and still have much further to go. They are like heirloom pieces that you can pass on to friends or family knowing they will retain their value and quality.
  • For high-quality vintage pieces, the craftsmanship is often second to none. Sometimes handmade, sometimes designer, the attention to detail lets you know that a lot of work went into making that piece by hand. It gives you a whole new level of respect for the art of making clothes.

It will be a real shame to let all these beautiful and original pieces end up in landfill! Moreover with the holidays coming up, you might want something special. So if you’re up for mixing vintage with your modern pieces, here are a few ideas on where to find the good stuff:

  1. Down Memory Lane, 34 Geelong street, Fyshwick
  2. Canberra Antiques Centre, 37 Townsville street, Fyshwick
  3. Designer Op Shop Emporium, Corner of Barier & 1 Lyell street, Fyshwick
  4. Marilyn on Kennedy, Kennedy street, (next to Two for Joy cafe), Kingston
  5. Canberra Markets – Old Bus Depot Markets (Portobello Road and Collectible Sunday-themed market days), Three Sixty, Canberra Fashion Markets
  6. Op shops – If you’re up for browsing, you’ll find some vintage pieces in many of your local op shops. Some of them have a designated vintage/retro section, while others have vintage mixed in with the contemporary pieces. You might want to ask the staff if or how they display their vintage.
