The Government is letting us all know the arrangements for the big Summernats City Cruise down Northbourne Avenue on Thursday 3 January:

The Cruise takes place between the Summernats entrance to Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) off Federal Highway down Northbourne Avenue through to the intersection with London Circuit and then back to the starting point.

“The Summernats City Cruise, which is a convoy of 200 of the best vehicles from the event, promises to attract a wide range of Canberrans and visitors,” said Senior Manager, Traffic Management and Safety, Roads ACT, Rifaat Shoukrallah.

“It is important the Cruise takes place safely so the Federal Highway and Northbourne Avenue will be closed in sections as the convoy passes. The Cruise will travel at 40 kilometres per hour with a police escort involving a lead car, trailing car and supporting motorcycles.

“Roads ACT will also coordinate the traffic lights for the Cruise to ensure it proceeds smoothly. Access will be provided to emergency service vehicles if necessary.

“The best vantage points are in the City and at the Summernats entrance near the Caltex service station site, Stirling Avenue, and the Federal Highway. These locations are where the vehicles will be travelling at their slowest so people have more of a chance to see them.

“There is also parking available in the City and parking is available at EPIC via Old Well Station Road, off Federal Highway.”

For public safety reasons, the public is not permitted to watch the Cruise from the central median strip on Northbourne Avenue or the Federal Highway. An alcohol ban is also in place along the Federal Highway and Northbourne Avenue for the duration of the Cruise.

No booze and no median strip?

My collection of Giant mountain bikes is a lot more impressive than some of the sh!tboxes you see these days at Summernats… and some of them a probably worth more too!

Maybe I’m getting old and jaded, but I reckon Summernats jumped the shark a long time ago. The only redeeeming thing this year is the HTH playing.

Belcoman were you there today?

MORE people out today than last year ….. looking at 25000 people.

Thank you all for coming!

Who cares if it was 4000 people or 40,000 people that were spectating. Why does it have to be a dick pulling contest?

Not everybody likes the Summernats, same as not everyone likes French paintings. People need to be tolerant and supportive of each other’s interests.Summernats is only on for less than a week, surely people can deal with the inconveniences of extra traffic and the odd road closure for this short time.

I’m sure most peeps would not care if the majority of spectators were not human trash.

I think it needs to be changed.

To shut Northbourne in the middle of the day is a bit silly, it is only for an hour and the cars go past too fast to enjoy them.

They should make it in the early evening about 7pm, that way people could bring their kids if they wished. Make it a bit more like a parade and it will be more enjoyable.

Having said that, it was better than last year.

I was thinking of going to Summernats this year but when I saw the BOM forecast of 36 degrees on Friday and 38 (!!) on Saturday I made other plans.

Oh lawdy, that McDonalds that opened up next to epic a few months ago is going to make an absolute killing over the next 3 days.

Now I wasn’t there but some very rough maths gives this.

5.9km from epic to London cct, I’ll take it as one way because I am sure most of the people that watch on the return leg are the same people that have just crossed the road to watch again.

Not accounting for intersecting roads then 20,000 people over 5900m equals 3.38 people per linear metre of roadside viewing space. If we assume 5% of that viewing space is unusable due to access, being an intersection/drain or some such then that goes to 3.6 people per metre.

If we then go a step further and assume that for most of the distance no one really gives a shit and just happen to be walking down the street then the remaining say 25 percent would need to have about 14.3 people per metre.

Once again I wasn’t there.

10,000, 15,000, 20,000???

Where do these ludicrous numbers keep coming from? Even if you want to include the people who were waiting to cross the street at lunchtime, there would not have been more than 4000 people along the entire route. I just hope the well paid marketing team of Mr Lopez will offer up some form of evidence to contradict this but I know this won’t happen?

Yes we all agree it brings money into town but AT WHAT COST???

Based on all of the pseudo business cases that the Summernats Fan Bois keep putting up, this event would be better off being situated somewhere between Goulburn and Oberon. After all, it is only tempoarry infrastructure that they utilise, right?

I didn’t go to see the Frnch paintings either but I am positive that I can be shown a direct and accountable net result of this event coming to town.

Belcoman may I ask where you were situated for last years CityCruise?

I was driving one of the cars in the cruise, and there certainly was more than 4000 people lining the roads.

I;m looking forward to taking part again this year, and after seeing the list of cars participating this year, I’m sure there will be a larger crowd than the 20,000 from 2012

Thanks for that. Again I would ask, please utilise any of the 20 or so video cameras that were in the cars to verify your statement. They would have filmed all of the crowds and this would clarify the numbers. There was NOT 20,000 there and the only way I could know that is if I went past all the people myself, which I did.

Then it appears you cant count

It appears you are one of chics spin monkeys

How about adding at what time the city cruise starts. I would of thought that would be fairly important factor in How to make the Summernats CityCruise work for you

Hey hey hey… there must be a stack of cash that flows through Canberra’s brothels, porn shops and local McDonald’s. The caravan parks are also full this time of year and at $20-30 a night… that’s a heap of cash. Lets not think of the wider societial benefit – where our women can experience ‘cat calls’, ‘show us ya tits’ and other fine examples of male behaviour.

We won’t get any of that from a French Painting exhibition…

How do you know what size my pushbike is?

One of the entrants was a Volvo so what’s your point

Why is the expansive, wide median strip any more dangerous or inappropriate than any other part of Northbourne Avenue?

Risk reduction. By keeping people off the median strip the organisers are reducing the amount of spectators traversing the streets. This rule was in effect way back during the old Northbourne cruises of the 90’s.

What I can’t understand is why the organisers have advertised that there are only two ‘best’ vantage points. Given the lack of roadside space, minor crowd control measures and an expected 10-20,000 spectators I wouldn’t be creating viewing hot spots. The cars will be doing 40kph max, so any location on the length of Northbourne is good so long as you have a clear line of sight.

That said I hope the cruise proves to be as popular as last year.

Why is the expansive, wide median strip any more dangerous or inappropriate than any other part of Northbourne Avenue?

Shouldn’t it be make it work for ‘youse’? (rhymes with booze)
