How to report a defective vehicle?

After years of having several “random inspections of the ACT Road fleet” Dickson inspections in my letterbox, and years of having cars randomly defected while on my street (Including one for bald rear tyres which was the reason why the car wasn’t driven that day as I was waiting for a mate to drop some wheels off), the old lady across the road has two brake lights out.

Told her about it months ago.

I rang Canberra Connect, but they said there was no service to do it.

That’s a load of crap, the old bitch has been reporting my cars for years for no good reason.

Anyone know?

Thanks

Um yes quite, I used to work there. A recall notice is not a defect, it a call to the owner of the vehicle to see if the report is correct. If it is then and the owner has not had it rectified prior to turning up at the test station then they will issue a defect. The inspectors at the station can also look over the car for any other defects if they suspect the vehicle may be carrying more.

Once the defect is issued then the 14 day presentation timeline you mention begins followed by the suspension and then eventually cancellation of the registration.

You are correct, my apologies. I was talking for police/RTA issued defect notices when as you say the public reports a vehicle it gets recalled for a check first.

No dramas 🙂

Kramer’s right. Why not fix her stop lights – you’ll get some good karma for it. I don’t want to ram her from behind.

Might be more rewarding than just getting good karma though, if she offers?

She may be a little rough, might have been a while…. so perhaps ask her to take her teeth our first….

Yes it does, it gets recalled to Dickson for a look to see if the issue is genuine. If it doesn’t show up the registration wont be renewed. They cant tell you about it because the issue is between Rego and the owner, you you.

Not quite. If you don’t present the vehicle within the period specified on the defect notice (normally 14 days) and get the defect cleared, the RTA will suspend the registration of the vehicle, meaning a $543 fine if caught driving the suspended vehicle (same fine as unregistered).

I will add, in my original post I mention the registration will not be renewed, what happens is the officer who receives the notification form automatically puts a block against the vehicle so no further transactions can occur. Because this action is not an official defect the presentation timeline does not apply yet as it has not been confirmed that there is an actual defect.

If the vehicle owner doesn’t show then the vehicle registration cannot be renewed because of the block. This is usually when the owner comes in and pleads innocent to receiving the notification.

Well you were doing the right thing by not driving it, but I still think it’s pretty fair for them to hit you up for it. Did the tyres get bald on a racetrack, you towed the car home, and then had it defected? If yes, I take it back, if no, then those tyres got bald on public roads so you still committed an offence.

In general, I wouldn’t report someone over brake lights, no matter how much it pisses me off. And it really pisses me off, too. But still, if she hasn’t taken any action yet, be a nice guy and offer to replace them for her. At least remind her again.

I would certainly report someone over brake-lights.

Only a couple of weeks ago, I was a passenger in a car driving at a reasonable distance behind a beat-up old ute who was tailgating a car in front of him/her. The first car indicated to make a turn across traffic into an adjacent street and because the ut was tail-gating the driver, they stopped suddenly – only we, driving safely behind didn’t see any indication of braking because we couldn’t see car number 1 and the car directly in-front had no lights. A crash was averted only because of my partner’s reaction, but not without having to almost mount the gutter. I also followed someone, at night, half-way- to Calwell once who didn’t have brake lights .. seriously, report it.

Don’t offer to fix it, she’ll hit you up for everything from the moment you do.

“That’s a load of crap, the old bitch has been reporting my cars for years for no good reason. “

You should smash the bitch’s car up. It’s all her fault.

(You live in west belco, yeah?)
