Doing good can be fun. In this case, a lot of fun.
How does a cruise around the lake with 10 of your nearest and dearest, accompanied by all the breathtaking beauty and drama of the Balloon Spectacular sound?
As the inaugural Canberra Coastrek fundraising walk for women’s heart health looms on 15 March, the Region Ramblers walking team has an amazing way for you to lend support and raise funds, all without getting off the sofa.
Led by group editor Genevieve Jacobs and our much-loved account executive team headed by Shayna Siakomotu, Alicia Webb and Arjun Sudhilal, the Ramblers have signed up to raise $2000 by walking the full 30 km Lake Circuit.
To assist us, our friends at Love Boats Canberra have made an incredibly generous offer. For each $10 donation you make to our team’s fundraising effort, you’ll go into the draw to win a Lake cruise for 10 people valued at $350.
The cruise occurs between 6 am and 9 am on Tuesday, 12 March, as a host of glorious balloons rise into the skies above Lake Burley Griffin.
All you need to do is go to the Region Ramblers fundraising page, make a donation of $10 or more and you’ll be eligible for the draw, which we’ll complete on 22 March, a week after the walk finishes.
Funds raised at the first Canberra Coastrek event will go to the Heart Foundation this year, with a particular focus on women’s heart health, treatment and awareness.
Hundreds of walkers and dozens of teams will be undertaking either the 20 km twilight course around West Basin and Kings Avenue Bridge or the 30 km thriller full circuit, aiming to raise $200,000 for women’s heart health. Each team pledges to raise $2000 for the Heart Foundation (or more!)
The Coastrek event was founded by Di Westaway and Wild Women On Top, one of Australia’s largest and longest-running women’s health movements. Their mission is to connect, coach and champion women in the outdoors through community hiking adventures around Australia.
Heart Foundation ambassador and well-known local journalist Louise Maher has been training for months and says she wants women to reflect on how different the symptoms of heart disease can be for them, how easily they’re overlooked and how important it is to persist with investigations.
After a terrifying episode where she was diagnosed with major blockages on the operating table, she knows how important it is to check and check again if you have any niggling concerns.
“I was lucky I had a really good GP, a really good cardiologist and a really good nagging partner, but so often women don’t get checked out,” she explained.
“They’re very busy; they’re looking after the health and well-being of everyone else, and they think – as I did – well, I’m just a bit unfit; I’m getting older.”
You can help with this noble cause without even strapping on your runners. Just donate $10 or more to the Region Ramblers or the team of your choice on the Coastrek website (please leave your name so we can contact you or email gjacobs@region.com.au with your contact details). Every $10 donation equals one entry into the prize draw.
