Huge power outage strikes Inner North

By johnboy - 15 February 2006 10

It’s bee a long time since the inner north saw a power outage that saw us breaking out the candles.

Around 6.30 everything went out, including the MacArthur-Northbourne traffic lights.

A call to the ACTEWAGL line listed in the phonebook told me they expected the power back on by 8. There was a traffic cop in place of the abovementioned lights within minutes and by 7:40 a truck had pulled up in front of the junction box and ten minutes later power was restored.

Nice to see things function so smoothly. I’ve decided to stay under candlelight for the night however.

What’s Your opinion?

He he…the sing-and-dance class…

I had a bit of a dance class in the dark, luckily with a battery-powered stereo. Felt sorry for the people in the earlier class — they had the whole thing in darkness with music from a blasting car radio for half of it.

We had at least four outages, (at least) one while we were out watching “Circus Oz” (which was fantastic, btw), and three between 10:30pm and 11:30pm, each for less than 10 minutes (of the latter 3). That was well after the storm had passed.

Weird, I live 5 or so houses down from those lights and we didn’t have even a flicker.

The outage didn’t extend as far as Ainslie.

If anyone’s interested, the reason that power can often be restored so quickly is because our power system is based on a “ring main” design, which means that by flicking a few switches the faulty part of the network can be isolated with everyone back on power.

Apparently the roof of Hawker college collapsed under the weight of the water and the SES boys and girls were out in force until the wee hours of the morning.

Not me, I had a gig at the Red Gecko in civic and could only wonder at how much damage the downpour was causing.
