York Park no carpark

Gary Humphries has saved the York Park oak plantation from becoming a carpark.

Last year a federal government department thought it might like to remove about two-thirds of the trees so it could build more offices and carparks in the area.

The oak trees in this particular area were planted, at least in part, by the Duke and Duchess of York when they came to open what is now Old Parliament House in 1927 (the Duke of York went on to become King George VI because of Wallis Simpson).

Senator Humphries took up the fight for the trees with Territories Minister Jim Lloyd who has now tabled an amendment to the National Capital Plan, protecting all of the trees from development.

Yes. If only our city wasnt bulit on a watershed…

I agree also, given the rate at which ACT trees are dying, last figures I was told were 100 mature trees died PER WEEK within the ACT, we shouldn’t be looking at adding to that figure.

Additionally, given that the trees were intentionally planted, there would have to be a reason behind that, even if the world had moved on since then, redeveloping a park into a concrete shithole is a far cry from being a final option.

There’s enough pressure to develop something big and grey out Gungahlin way, why not go out there and build your big stuff ?

As for parking, in the ACT it’s already an acknowledged joke. Subterrainean parking is the only way to go.

Thumper, I agree whole heartedly. Not too mention the bullshit the boys had to go through to stop them buring in 03. Chopping them down would be a debarcle

Crazy Charles is both bloodnut1 so I’d say you’d be fine.

The sooner we can take the NCA out of this process and provide true self government, the better.

If i support this does it make me a greenie or a monarchist. Can I be both? Didn’t think so.

Meat head gimp NCA bitches. thats all i have to say.
