Gary Humphries has put out a press release complaining about one of my pet bugbears: media using “Canberra” when they mean “the Federal Government”.

“To make the Canberra community the whipping boy for the actions of the Federal Government is unfair,” Senator Humphries said.

He points out that there is only one Government member from Canberra (himself) out of 126.

He also says that he’s noticed the media usually use “Canberra” when they are talking about the Government in a negative way. In a bit of bipartisanship, he asks them to stop doing this because it is not helping the ACT Government’s campaign to get people to move here.

Senator Humphries says he wants people to move here. If the PM won’t live here why will others? He needs to set an example.

Wow, someone who is supposed to be representing Canberrans actually acts in their interests?? We’d better be careful or he’ll be snapped up by the private sector…

And it’ll be even worse when the latest rates increase flows through.

Given the meeja have picked up on the federal politicians’ disparaging use of the word “Canberra” this is all a bit disingenuous. This was certainly the approach of Gary’s mates when Canberra meant decisions emanating from federal Labor Government – those decisions are in the main now made in Sydney.

As for the “live in Canberra” campaign one of the major disincentives is staring us in the face in the latest CPI fihures. We had the biggest jump over the last 12 months in the cost of living indicators covered by the CPI – 4.8%…

wow – this is the third time i’ve sided with gary – saving the film + sound archive and viting for RU486 drug being the other two.
Has he lost the support of little johnny and doesn’t mind making waves – or is he just getting braver in his old age?
