Humphries for the banning of live export?

By wooster 22 August 2011 2

Ms Wooster and a few of the chaps joined me for the Free the Bears Trivia night on Saturday eve.

Pleasant time was had by all and I am led to believe the bears will be better off on account of it.

However, an interesting occurrence caught my eye.  The eventual victors of the evening were the table named ‘Ban Live Exports’.  On said table was one Gary Humphries, ACT Liberal Senator.

Although I hold the chap in quite high esteem, and indeed, believe that his affiliates better represent the views and ambitions of chaps such as myself, I found it rather odd that he would be at the table, given its name.

This is, of course, because the official view of the chaps in blue (the Lib-Nat Coalition) is anything but in alignment with the obvious message of his table name.

Were any other Rioters in attendance at said event?  Perhaps I’ve misunderstood something here, but in light of the apparent importance of party discipline in this ‘kinder, gentler polity’ (end sarcasm), I can only take it that this was an attempt to shift away from the Federal line or a rather poor decision…

The live exports campaign has been asking politicians to indicate where they stand on live export. Quite a few, on all sides, have come out and expressed their opposition to it. I don’t recall seeing Humphries listed under those who opposed it, but I haven’t looked lately.

That’s why the campaign, and those rallies a couple of weeks back, was really pushing for the vote on the bills to be a conscience vote, rather than along official party lines which are to continue the trade.

The debate was actually on Order in the House last night, with Wilkie and Bandt’s speeches, and also Kelvin Thomson (Wills, VIC).
