ABC 702 (Sydney) has a story on moves by our Chief Minister to snaffle the much admired Queanbeyan hospital into her health system.

Queanbeyan Mayor John Barilaro is also in favour:

Member for Monaro John Barilaro is supportive of a cross-border health agreement but says both governments should fund it.

Mr Barilaro wants one large regional health network encompassing southern NSW and the ACT.

“It means more money from the NSW Government and it may need some funding from the ACT Government if we’re going to come to some sort of agreement,” he said.

“What we need to do is put all the options on the table, work towards a common goal which is about becoming a regional health network that includes the ACT with the southern part of NSW.”

Sounds suspiciously like a ‘lowest common denominator’ approach…

This is a horrible idea. If QBN hospital merges with the ACT Health juggernaught of death then Canberra residents will no longer be able to avoid the minimum 12 month wait for elective surgery by nipping across the border.

It’s sometimes a better idea to think of the bigger picture…..

But it’s so much easier to leap to conclusions and make unfounded and incorrect statements…

If Qbn hospital is any good, it’s in spite of mg’t, not because of it. Health admin in NSW is so very, very poor it is beyond belief. and we do have a lot of cross border stuff going on… a large part of ACT’s labour force lives in NSW, but shops and works and consumes in the ACT. It really should be properly analysed.

Yay, so Queanbeyan Hospital will become just as rubbish as Canberra Hospital, and Katy and her cronies can lay claim to a brand new hospital they didn’t pay for in the process. That sounds like an awesome deal for Queanbeyan residents.

Considering when I worked at TCH i’d confidently estimate that about 20-30% of pts. were from regional NSW (including Qbn), it sounds like it might be a good idea. Especially as I understand parts of Qbn hospital are closed on various days of the week due to staff under-resourcing.
So regardless of who pays for it, at least the new facilities and extra (currently empty) beds at Qbn could be used more – even if it is for you precious Qbn residents only (and thus making less of you needing to travel to TCH instead)? Surely that would be a good thing for you?

Great idea. Various other services in the past have been run with ACT as part of the region, rather than some artifical separate area. They could cast an eye over the education system too, the current stoush about schools being a case in point.

The health system is already doing this in a number of areas where population centres range over state borders. Albury health area is now run out of Victoria, for instance.
