The Canberra Times is following up on the cockroach problems in the Tuggeranong Hyperdome that lead to the much loved Z Brasserie of Anketell Street closing down and are causing problems for other retailers:

Manager of Sanity Records Rachel Lizars said the problem was so bad she refused to buy lunch from the food court next to her store for fear of the pests. She also reported finding cockroaches in her store.

”I’ve had them crawling near the phone by my head,” she said.

Ms Lizars’ encounters were not limited to work hours. ”I was in a [Hyperdome] restaurant the other day, and I saw a cockroach crawling by my friend’s head.”

Another retail owner located in the vicinity of the former Z Brasserie site, who did not wish to be named, said her store had also been plagued by cockroaches. The infestation resulted from the installation of a nearby grease trap.

Over a decade ago Westfield Belconnen had quite the rat problem in the service areas, I’d be surprised if many malls were different.

The cockroaches invading stores is the hyperdome managements way of upping the rent for all small shops, more numbers inside the stores means more rent for management.

Or it could just be hyperdome management in a new guise.

Pretty much what I was wondering too! Amazing amount of cockroach action near this lady’s friends’ heads. Maybe the coming Mouse Plague will eat all the cockroaches.

Tuggers has a few more problems than cockroaches, just drive down the main street or homeworld to see all the “For Lease” signs…..

Where are these people putting their heads?
