Are you looking to explore the potential benefits of hypnotherapy in Canberra? You’ve landed in the right place.

Hypnotherapy is the unique process of becoming deeply relaxed and engaging the unconscious mind. The aim is to make a change, a profound, long-lasting change that can help patients achieve their goals and overcome their setbacks.

After consulting Canberra locals, we’ve decided on the top three hypnotherapy clinics and practitioners in the region. These individuals and centres have had many successes – including helping their clients quit smoking and lose weight.

Let’s jump right into it.

What makes a reliable hypnotherapist?

Whether this is your first time seeking out a hypnotherapist or you’ve engaged in this type of therapy many times before, we suggest keeping an eye out for the following features:

  • Positive feedback from past clients. One of the best ways to gauge the quality of a hypnotherapist is to examine their track record. Are past clients pleased with their results? Did the therapy actually help them achieve what they wanted? Reviews and testimonials should give you valuable insight into a particular therapist or clinic.
  • Extensive experience. When it comes to any kind of therapy, experience is critical. An experienced therapist has worked with patients from all walks of life grappling with a whole host of personal challenges.
  • Compassion. When you begin any sort of therapy, you should feel accepted and welcomed. The therapist should never judge.

The top hypnotherapists in Canberra according to you

RiotACT’s editorial team has combed through 19 years of on-site comments to compile a list of the most recommended businesses according to you.

To be listed in our Best of Canberra series, each business needs to have consistently received positive feedback on RiotACT and Facebook as well as maintaining a minimum average of 4/5 stars on Google.

Now, it’s time to introduce who you picked at the top hypnotherapists in the Canberra region.

Canberra Hypnotherapy Clinic

If you are caught in a cycle of negative self-talk, frustration, or over-analysis, the team behind the Canberra Hypnotherapy Clinic can help. They understand the value of education and experience, which is why their therapists have undertaken far more than just a weekend course. The Canberra Hypnotherapy Clinic is registered with several industry governing bodies, including the Australian Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy and the National Hypnotherapist Register of Australia. This is why you can rest easy, knowing you are accessing leading hypnotherapy services.

Capital Mindset

The aim of the hypnotherapy offered at Capital Mindset is to equip clients with the skills and tools they need to remain present and aware. The goal is to end the habit of operating in auto-pilot and to rediscover how it feels to live in the moment. If that sounds appealing to you, Capital Mindset is a fantastic hypnotherapy clinic to check out.

Canberra Hypnotherapy Centre

Offering both 2.5-hour one-on-one and group sessions, the Canberra Hypnotherapy Centre gives you the opportunity to dive deeply into the personal challenges you are facing. With this exploration comes a chance to define and achieve your goals – whatever they may be. Their qualified team understands that it’s only natural to feel a little sceptical about hypnosis. That’s why they offer a free 30-minute phone consultation.

I turned my life around after seeing Len Forbes. I rang around and ended up speaking to Maria who explained the whole process so I was comfortable with going ahead. She also helped me think through what I really wanted to achieve. A very big bonus is that it’s only one session. I’m healthier than I’ve ever been and couldn’t be happier – highly recommend Canberra Hypnotherapy Centre.

I would never normally go for something like hypnosis but when I became very sick, and it was exacerbated by stress I went to see Len Forbes. I cannot explain how profoundly it has helped me. Lens experience and honest care and concern shine through. He’s down to earth and explains the process clearly as part of the session and I am recommending him to everyone. It really can change your life. https://www.canberrahypnotherapycentre.com.au/

Another vote for Len Forbes – hands down the best thing I have ever done!! For me and my family!!

I was nervous going in, hoping it would work but also cautious thinking it was not going to work and would be a waste. I was completely surprised how easy it was and how comfortable I was made to feel. I would highly recommend Len Forbes! A few friends have tried group hypnotherapy elsewhere and it didn’t work for them so I decided to try a 1 on 1 approach. I went in on the 5 October 2011 and haven’t looked back!!

I gave up smoking 6 years ago with Len Forbes – he’s here in Canberra. Makes no sense to me that it worked but it did. I haven’t felt like a cigarette since – had smoked for nearly 30 years and tried everything – patches, zyban, champix etc. I was skeptical too but there you go…

I know this is very much after the fact since the original question was asked in 2011 but
I would like to throw in my 2 cents worth since I am a suitably qualified hypnotherapist and counsellor. I am aware that many people still read this post.

Being a ex-smoker myself I am well aware of the struggles associated with stop smoking.
We all want to achieve something, but most times we just do not have the necessary willpower to persist to achieve our goals, take New Year’s Resolutions for example….how many of them last? The technical term for that is called Homeostasis – the inert tendency to resist change.

Around 90% of your mind is your subconscious mind and that is the main driver of your thought processes. The subconscious mind operates on the pain and pleasure principle. When you started smoking, it made you feel good and that associated smoking with pleasure in your mind. That association was reinforced every time you light up, and now if you want to stop, your mind sees that as pain. Your subconscious then tries to get you back to the pleasure by sending you thoughts that will get you to smoke again. Thoughts like “Man, I miss my after meal cigarette” or “I am so stressed now, a cigarette would be great” or if you order a beer at the pub you can almost see the guy go “You want a cigarette with that?”.

Hypnosis speaks to the subconscious process that drives the desire to smoke and nips it in the bud at the source…….if you would excuse the pun.

I would recommend Canberra Hypno Counsellor. They are a qualified expert in this area.

I would strongly recommend Christina Richards, her website http://www.CanberraHypnoCounsellor.com

I can personally recommend Joanne Keighley-Kilner in Red Hill – 0407 950 434. One session in
December 2010 after a 20 year habit – best $170 I ever spent.

Good luck!

8 Yrs ago I gave up smoking after jogging and losing weight (jogging and smoking do not go hand in hand) consuming jonathon apples when in season that year, licorice and tuna salad. I put it down to lifestyle changes, eating jonathon apples (the pectin in the apples?) and licorice that broke my cravings within three weeks.

Hi,

I used Penny Clarke at Your Hypnotherapy in Ainslie and she was excellent. No cravings. I don’t smoke at all now. Three sessions.

I know someone who did the one session hypnotherapy to quit and was succesful. (I’ll have to double check who it was) I do wonder how much of it can be contributed to the therapy and how much to the price tag and the fear of losing face after she told everyone about it. But whatever works…

“I currently training in hypnotherapy and can do hypnotherapy sessions, free of charge.”

So you’re not qualified

“Specifically I would like to stop smoking.”

Willl power, save yourself wasting money

Hypnotherapy doesn’t work for everybody, some people cannot be hypnotised, as myself, I’m too strong willed. I’ve been told by a hypnotist.

I hear what you are saying, I am not a total believer but i think it may be more of case of pushing you in the right direction once committed. Anyway, i have tried every method except hypontherapy and accupuncture so I don’t have much to lose.

Well, if you’re going to give it a go, I’d recommend at least thoroughly checking their credentials beforehand. There is no govt regulation of hypnotherapy, and any charlatan can rent an office and call themselves a hypnotherapist. And like all pseudo-sciences, they rely on people who are in the “I have nothing to lose” frame of mind; remember, you always have your hard-earned money to lose

BTW, have you considered e-cigs? That’s how I quit smoking a year ago. Of course, like everything else, there’s no guarantees and it’s not for everyone, but at least I don’t stand to profit from your decision when I suggest this. If you haven’t yet looked into them, you should

And while hypnotherapy is a grey area, I can state categorically that acupuncture is COMPLETE crap. There’s a modicum of evidence to suggest it can help with some back pain issues (although the same evidence suggests that anyone can do it, with no training required), but as far as quitting smoking goes, you might as well throw your money down the drain. Quackwatch.org is a good site to read up on some of these things. Hell, I just checked Wikipedia and even that has all you need to know about acupuncture

If you do end up going the hypnotherapy route, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts afterwards (still wouldn’t recommend it though)

The website will also clear the misconceptions about hypnosis.

Hrm, maybe I should clarify actually…hypnotherapy itself isn’t completely without merit. The problem is more when people claim that it is all that is required to treat a condition, or that it is a panacea, or that it involves re-visiting “past lives” and other such ridiculous claims.

Best of luck with quitting smoking 🙂

Personally, I would recommend not believing in pseudo-science…

My 20 year old daughter saw these people and she hasn’t smoked for over 6 months now…..

I used hypnosis to quit smoking. That was nearly 20 years ago. Arguably one of the better things I have done. This is NOT like the hypnosis as entertainment you might see at a club. Some people are better subjects than others. Good luck with it.

I am a clinical hypnotherapist in Canberra and have worked with a lot of people who came to give up smoking. I use is a 3 visit process that works on the foundation emotion rather than just aversion therapy. Once the emotional base is dealt with there is generally no transfer of addiction once the smoking has ceased.
