We haven’t seen any announcement as to why the Australian Aboriginal Flag (that’s its name) flies proud over Civic this morning.

Anyone?

UPDATE: We’ve been informed that it’s for reconciliation week.

The fantasies of homosexual prison rape mentioned by a couple of previous commenters are of course primarily a reflection on themselves, but are otherwise beneath contempt.

If you think that someone’s opinion about a design on a piece of coloured cloth is “beneath contempt” then perhaps the problem is yours.

Surely they can’t do worse than our previous overlords and they know how to take care of the environment…

You haven’t lived in many Aboriginal communities have you?

Thanks for the heads up about the TSI flag. We will see lots of it again in July – a glorious burst of tropical sea colour in our greyest month.

I would be very cautious about expressing those sentiments around any Torres Strait Islanders, BTW. If you think that offending Tongans or Maoris might be a problem, you have barely blinked your eyes open to what might be awaiting you …

They should really be flying the Torres Strait Islander flag as well …

They are, about 400m away, a whole run of them down Commonwealth Avenue bridge

Is that the one that looks like a guy bending over from the back? It always looks to me like someone picking up the soap in the showers, or maybe even goatse.cx

Both are great designs and symbols.

I hate to be disrespectful to the Torres Strait people but have always thought their flag looks like someone giving us all the moon.

Will they fly the Jolly Roger on the next Talk Like a Pirate Day?

Anyway I’m also pleased to learn of our Indigenous overlords. Surely they can’t do worse than our previous overlords and they know how to take care of the environment…

To All Flag Marshals: Action Australia-wide and Action at Australian overseas posts
National Sorry Day, 26 May 2011
and
National Reconciliation Week, 27 May 2011 to 3 June 2011
National Sorry Day acknowledges and raises awareness of the history and continued effect of the forced removal on Indigenous Australians. Further information is at http://www.nsdc.org.au.

National Reconciliation Week celebrates the rich culture and history of Indigenous Australians. Further information is at http://www.reconciliation.org.au.

Flying the Indigenous Flags on National Sorry Day and throughout National Reconciliation Week confirms our national respect for Indigenous Australians. From Thursday 26 May to Friday 3 June 2011 the Australian Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag should be flown on additional flagpoles, where available, next to or near the Australian National Flag on Australian Government buildings and establishments. Other organisations are encouraged to follow this protocol.

If there is only one flagpole available at a flag station the Australian Aboriginal Flag or the Torres Strait Islander Flag should not replace the Australian National Flag. If two flagpoles are available, it is at the discretion of the authority concerned to determine which of the two flags is flown with the Australian National Flag. The Australian Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag have equal status and may be flown in any order after the Australian National Flag.

Should it be the practice to fly other flags at the flag station, please refer to the Order of Precedence for flying the Australian National Flag along with other flags, which can be found in the ‘Australian Flags’ booklet (http://www.itsanhonour.gov.au/symbols/docs/australian_flags_excerpt.pdf).

Your assistance is appreciated.

It’s Reconciliation Week 27 May to 3 June. The Aboriginal Flag flies on there every year to mark the occasion
