Up on the northern shore of Lake Burley Griffin, near Scrivener Dam, is some of the nicest walking country man and dog could ask for anywhere.

The other day I noticed a strange little structure hidden in the grass.

Closer inspection revealed it to be a long abandoned picnic area style garbage bin, still concreted in although much the worse for wear, its lid still secured by a chain.

Who built it? Why did they build it? Why was left to grow over?

If you go wandering in the paddocks down Kambah way you might come across something a lot larger than a old rubbish bin. There’s a gantry crane down there somewhere.

Which paddocks in Kambah? Do you mean down the hill behind Allchin Circuit?

I think everyone got to read Ozymandias at school, and then again at uni. It’s quite good, and not too long which is a very important factor in a poem becoming famous. I didn’t click on the hyperlink… I can’t quote the poem, but I guess it stays with you.

I imagine that paddock used to be mowed and was some kind of public amenity. Now it’s a snake habitat.

I hope you engraved “look on my works, ye mighty, and despair” onto the bin.

see kiddies, classics training can be a useful endeavour…

Making bad jokes on an internet forum that only a few people will get is “useful” now? 😉 (Well, a few people plus anyone who clicked on JB’s handy hyperlink).

I should add, I recognised the poem (and got your joke) as a result of playing Civilization 4. See kiddies? Computer games are an excellent substitute for classics training 🙂

Note: In Australia it is “traveller”, not “traveler” (US spelling).

oh, i just despair!

There are a few tables and bins in that general area, some of which have vanished over the years.

I guess that area used to be kept as a public recreation place

I remember it was v popular with parking. but then, there were far more trees around prior to the fires.

What are you trying to say with the Shelley reference? Is this once might garbage receptacle a testament to the Hubris of John Overall?

I guess that area used to be kept as a public recreation place
