Help!

I need a lovely female model to help me shoot some indie clothing, Preferably size 12-14. Experience is not required!

I’m a female photographer. It will be on a volunteer basis, however a keepsake CD of images will be included.

Can anyone help, or offer any suggestions on where I should be advertising?

Thanks Rioters.

Sorry, I’m going to ignore the advice in your last sentence. You really can’t use offense (which is the US spelling anyway) as a verb like that. ‘If you offense’ is just wrong. ‘If you take offence’, or ‘if you find labels offensive’ is right.

I would like to comment on your comment’s contents, but I am currently too offended by that big fat no-no.

If you offense at a label or term someone has used, you are perpetuating the problem.

Most people know models are overly thin and thus by definition a plus size model may be what the average woman is. However just because someone is the average doesn’t mean its good. As someone who has to fight to keep weight off, half of it is mental, being happy with who you are and what you are, but the other half is also recognising, hey i’m a little unfit or i need to improve myself or maybe a little bit of weight on my belly etec etc and just working on it. Some people can exercise 7 days a week eat fine but not lose weight.

Don’t need to strive for perfection, just make the most of your life.

I am a genuine plus size and even I find the whole “curvy = real woman” thing offensive. My thin friends are all real women, as are the larger ones. You don’t see similar views in, say, men’s magazines claiming that only those with chiselled pecs, abs you could grate cheese on and hung like donkeys = real men. I would hazard a guess that a lot of men (generally, not RA menfolk) criticising womens’ bodies are not that gorgeous themselves, yet think they are attractive enough to be casting aspersions on the attractiveness of the fairer sex. I am not beautiful, nor am I gifted with the body of a supermodel. But I am still a woman, and I still would be were I size 6 and a AA cup.

You might not fit the mould of what advertising executives and art directors would have us all believe is “beautiful”, but don’t think for a minute that means you aren’t beautiful.

I’m a tall, fat, ugly, man, let me model for you or you are guilty of a whole host of “ists”!

I have seen people posting such Ads on freelance websites. It’s better you offer a pay for this, even though small but it will help attract some good faces. best of luck 🙂

So., now Pooks age limitation is also discriminatory to older and attractive women as well, hated modelling anyway, a scummy outfit when you start out!!!

35 is pretty arbitrary. Cate Blanchett and her cohort of beauties is, what, 40 or 42? Elle Mcpherson is 50. And remember, you can use flattering lighting!

Helen Mirren. Vanessa Redgrave. Catherine Deneuve. Kristin Scott Thomas. Carole Bouquet.

Lots of women manage to not end up looking like a beanbag as soon as they turn 40.

I_filed, hugh funny I’m well over 35 and still don’t have an issue modelling yes maybe Elle Mc is a stunner and always has been but some little girls are a bit the same just we are only photographic not catwalk!!!!

Ms Cheeky, anyone from 16-35 yrs old is fine. Wait….now I’ll get flamed for being ageist. 😉 Ask your friend to email me if interested.

I reckon the divergent size thing is a massive conspiracy by manufacturers and retailers to make it impossible to buy clothes over the internet. Online competition drives prices down and reduces the ability of both functional levels of the market to raise prices above cost.

I mean if everyone followed a standard sizing approach, it would greatly reduce the need to attend a physical store front and try stuff on, because you’d have a better-than-even chance of buying off-the-rack casual stuff that fits from the interwebs.

Northwest9, I agree!!!

Henry BG, He he I am with you on that one!!!!

I’m with you lulu, I am also a very healthy size 8 and certainly not unhealthy, I understand that all women the same shape and size would be boring but being labeled ‘straight up and down’ and ‘looks like a young boy’ is offensive. I am a very healthy mother of two!!!!

Wanna tell you a story
‘Bout a woman I know
When it comes to lovin’
Oh, she steals the show
She ain’t exactly pretty
She ain’t exaclty small
42-39-56
You could say she’s got it ALLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!

Never had a woman, never had a woman like you
Doin’ all the things, doin’ all the things you do
Ain’t no fairy story
Ain’t no skin-and-bones
But you give all you got, weighin’ in at nineteen stone

You’re a whole lotta woman
A whole lotta woman
I gotta whole lotta Rosie
A whole lotta Rosie
A whole lotta Rosie
I gotta whole lotta woman, yeah-yeah-yeah

Honey, you can do, do it to me all night long
Only one can turn, only one can turn me on
All through the night-time
Right around the clock
To my suprise, Rosie never stops

You’re a whole lotta woman
A whole lotta woman
I gotta whole lotta Rosie
A whole lotta Rosie
A whole lotta Rosie
I gotta whole lotta woman, yeah-yeah-yeah

Also, there’s no mistaking that if you get over a size 14 you are most likely overweight, even if that’s what most women are in reality.

Not in France. Women over there know how to take care of their figures and they mostly have the intelligence and self-control to stay slim.

Most models are thin because they are very tall and very very very young – young tall girls are generally thinner.

A size 12 or above model will look “big” in photos because we’re used to pictures of teenagers made up to look like women (and adult women and actresses who starve themselves to look like young women).

Also, there’s no mistaking that if you get over a size 14 you are most likely overweight, even if that’s what most women are in reality.

Unmitigated cr*p originating from the mouths of surly fashion queens. Plus size is over 16 – always has been.

Yeah… in what country?

Depends where you are – strolling around your average Shopping Mall you will quickly discover that a Size16 in those places would be considered anorexic.

Exactly. US, UK and European sizing has always been messed up, and is even mores now with vanity sizing so common.

And let’s not count the blokes out from this. Depending on what sweatshop my shoes come out of, anything from a Size 8 to a 9.5 can fit on my size 9 feet. The whole concept of measuring first has become somewhat redundant.

For the definitive answer on what defines “plus size” we need to consult the Real Australians™ and see what they think.

The “thin women aren’t real women/healthy” snobbery is pretty offensive though.

Yes it is! I do not look like a boy. I am healthy and have always been happy with my body (It’s not perfect and I’ve never expected it to be. A good body image isn’t about perfection, It’s about acceptance and love and it makes you want to take care of yourself). I have been around the same weight for over 30 years. In that time dress sizes have got bugger. Whereas once I was an 8-10, I am now a 6-8.

I find advertising campaigns that insist that the only “real” women are those with excess kilos and DD cup breasts to be really offensive. Who are they to say that I and others of my build are not ‘real’ women? Some of the posts in this thread are similarly offensive.

Good luck to the OP in her quest for models of all sizes. I hope the shoot goes well.

I’m just over 5 foot and a 12 – and would be considered overweight.
My friend is over 6 foot and a 12 – and she’s considered skinny.

Go figure.

I was attempting to be reasonably professional in my advertisement. Let me try again;

“Slightly unhealthy binge drinker of wine/photographer who happens to be a size 12 herself is seeking a nice/friendly/beautiful-inside and out woman who enjoys wearing vintage clothes in front of a camera.

I currently have a nice/friendly/beautiful lady who models for me and happens to be a size 8.

Amazingly, Clothing is made in many different sizes.

I have already procured a model for my clothing sized 8 to 10, thus I am looking for a woman who is a size known as ‘Plus sized” in the fickle, bullshit world of size 6-8 models. PS. In no way, shape or form do I endorse the label ‘Plus sized.”

Agree with “being healthy and happy, whatever size you are”.

I suppose if seeking a so-called plus sized model at an agency or modelling school then the industry terminology would be used (calling 12-14 plus is just part of the silliness there) otherwise why not simply say what size your after? I might have been interested but I went to a department store and discovered that for $5 more in a different section of the store I can buy an identical t-shirt labelled S. I’m small, who knew! 🙂

Precisely, we’re talking about *models* here. Not regular people. Regular models are slim and usually tall women, and in their teens or 20s.

The usual outrage is amusing. It’s like people with an IQ of 110 complaning about not being smart enough for Mensa. It doesn’t mean you are dumb. , The “thin women aren’t real women/healthy” snobbery is pretty offensive though.

And then people wonder why women have issues when they are being called “plus-size” in what is the average Australian dress size. I’m still trying to comprehend what’s attractive about anything under size 12-14. If I wanted a woman with the boy of a young teenaged boy…

Miranda Kerr is I believe a size 8 now after having her kid, ’cause there’s nothing attractive about her at all. So some women are naturally a size 12+ and they look great, doesn’t mean just because you’re under a size 12 you have the body of a boy and can’t look just as good as a now ‘average’ Australian girl.

Dear god! You’d think the feminazi’s would be grateful someone was giving a fat bird a chance to do some modelling.

POOKS – try modelmayhem.com
Search for Canberra. Lots of local creative talent.

For god sake people, did you see the word “model” she is asking for a model and yes if the model is between that size range 12-14 is a plus size model.

P.S and nothing wrong with plus size models, they just appeal to other difference markets

to answer the op – when i was doing photography i went in to some of the funkier salons and was always able to source models from among their clientele; they usually have their clients model for them at hair shows, and these women (invariably, they’re women) are not at all of the usual ‘model’ dimensions, so should be excellent for your needs. try axis on barry drive, or next on mort st for starters…

or hang out in the store from where the clothing is available (or similar clothing) and simply ask if customers are interested. you can only ask…

And the fact that the OP is female may prevent her from seeming too overwhelmingly sleazy. ‘Hi, nice haircut. Are you size 14? Thought so. Are you interested in doing some modelling?’

I agree DJ Mac, height does come into it but most Australian women aren’t overly tall, they seem to be getting taller though but for us that are shorter and smaller, size 12-14 makes us look like little bubbles.

Oh and the comment we are straight up and down may be the case for young girls but if you went looking (little women) have the curves as well.

Look, I wasn’t going to comment but this statement ‘Australian women’s average size is 12-14’ is appalling, yes it is now but only since access to so much junk, easy to cook and take way food has become the norm that Australian women have gone from average 8-10 to 12+ size. I am a little size 8 depending on the brand and certainly don’t take on the look of a boy!!!

I am the poor girl that manages to get a seat on the bus and then has some plus size take the seat next to me and also half of my seat, I don’t get half fares though!!!!

When at least 67.4% of Australians are overweight (according to the World Health Organisation, 2007), I don’t think the average Australian women’s dress size is a size any woman should be aspiring to…

So, does that mean a size 12 is obese? Jebus, I hope not. Alternatively, call me a fatty lover.

What is interesting is the discrepancy in sizing between stores claiming an Australian Standard (there is an old one, formulated in the 1950s against data from the 1920s). Two sites (I will not name them) claim different results:

Site A
Size 6 8 10 12 14 16
Bust (cm) 81 86 91 96 101 106
Waist (cm) 58 63 68 73 78 83
Hips (cm) 87 92 97 102 107 112

Site B
Size 6 8 10 12 14 16
Bust (cm) NA 82 87 92 97 102
Waist (cm) NA 63 68 73 78 83
Hips (cm) NA 88 93 98 103 108

I am seriously annoyed – for a woman my height size 12 is perfectly within the medically advised weight range – so why that is called “plus sized” is beyond me…… One thing people seem to forget when comparing women’s sizes today to women of the past is that we are TALLER – every generation we are getting that way – so saying that we should be the same weight or the same waist, bust and hip measurements as our grandmothers generation when we are several inches taller is a complete crock.

That’s why they are referred to as “plus sized models” rather than “plus sized persons”. Models are generally fairly tall and slim, and as far as I know not meant to represent society in general, so for a model size 12 is plus sized.

And no I’m not inferring that models aren’t persons. They are a sub-set of persons, making the reference to models more specific than to persons in general.

Whew, so glad that I wasn’t the only one thinking “Size 12 is plus sized?!”
