The ABC reports that ANU is going to take a more gradual approach to trimming the fat.

In an email to staff this afternoon, Professor Young conceded the timeline for the savings had been ambitious.

He said any forced redundancies would now only come as a last resort.

“It is likely that this process will result in significant shifts in the mix of skills of our staff,” Professor Young said.

“Retraining and redeployment are potential outcomes. It is also possible that there may be a reduction in staff numbers.

The VC’s statement really seems to just be spreading the pain over a few more years.

sorry, pet hate in title: when one performs a ‘backflip’, one ends up facing the same way, so one would never know a manouevre was performed if one wasn’t a witness. when one performs a u-turn, or an about face, etc, one is going against the prior direction. which is what is metaphorically meant with this, an the media’s generally, usage of this phrase. can riotact avoid it, please?

/petty rant…

Um, it’s nice to see you and HenryBG have so much in common (see #2). And that you are both more pedantic than I am! Or better on the balance beam, anyway.

I could bore on about the meaning of ‘volta’ in a sonnet, but I’m not going to.

But nevertheless he starts with trimming the arts. So lets all go to a concert and listen to the sound of money being rubbed together. Good one.

How about cutting off ex-employees – like, say, ex-Chancellors – from free use of University resources?

Obviously you’ve mis-used the word “backflip”, a gymnastic procedure which might serve to confuse an inattetive observer but which leaves the performer facing in the same direction.

Perhaps you mean he “performed a volte-face”?

My recommendation: start from the Research Office. Those people are incredibly unproductive – takes forever to get a response.
