A 21-year-old Richardson man today (Wednesday, December 21) has been charged with intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm after an incident outside the ICBM nightclub in Civic early last Sunday morning (December 18).

ACT Policing took the alleged offender into custody after he attended City Police Station around 12.10pm today. He was interviewed and admitted to having struck the victim, a 26-year-old Aranda man, on the jaw with a clenched fist.

The assault resulted in the victim suffering two jaw fractures, four broken teeth, a laceration to the back of his head, and a ruptured ear canal. The victim will require further surgery and ongoing orthodontic treatment.

The alleged offender was released this evening under strict ACT Watch House bail conditions and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on January 12, 2012.

When he was at the Police station he was free to leave, until they decided they had enough evidence to arrest him, been poking fun at stuff long?

Has anyone considered the possible damage to his hand from that louts jaw? How do we know he wasnt defending himself from an assault by jaw? It happens all the time!! Poor devil.

Me and two of my mates were attacked by a gang of hoods in Brisbane a long time ago. I’d just got out of the army, and the other two guys were still in, so it was a serious tactical error on the part of the evildoers. The main thing I remember about that incident though is that I was so annoyed at what was happening that I punched one bloke in the face using poor technique and buggered my right hand so that I couldn’t use it for a couple of weeks.

I’m pretty sure the bloke I hit felt a lot worse though. As others have commented, people accustomed to glamorous TV and XBox violence have got no idea what can happen as a result of swinging a fist.

I hope the victim is able to recover from what sound like terrible injuries.

He didn’t really mean to hurt the guy, I think he should be let off with a warning.

My sarcasm detector went off.

He wouldn’t have hit the guy if he didn’t want to hurt him, but that doesn’t mean he wanted to put him in hospital.

But Your Honour, I only intended to hurt him just enough to hurt him but not enough to cause consequences for me?
If someone in their own home acting in defence against a thief or a party gatecrasher has to worry about the words “undue force” then someone who wants to hurt someone else sure should have to!

I’m fairly sure that if he intentionally punched someone that he didctualyl mean to hurt the guy and should be charged with assault and pay for the other guy’s treatment.

Not saying he deserves to get off, but I’m pretty sure most people have no idea how easy it is to do real damage. If your only exposure to violence is TV and movies, you probably think a punch like that won’t even bruise, because of course even being shot and stabbed won’t stop you doing parkour five minutes later (what do you mean the bullet tore went through the muscle?!). You need a sledgehammer or a killer robot to actually break a bone, amirite?

He wouldn’t have hit the guy if he didn’t want to hurt him, but that doesn’t mean he wanted to put him in hospital.

Not sure if trolling.

On another note, at least the offender had the conscience to turn himself in (eventually). I have a friend who boxes, and I can’t help but remember him telling me about what it feels like to break a jaw. He said the feeling is pretty shocking, and is unmistakable. Perhaps our friend from Richardson was plagued with a guilty conscience?

Being a drunk moron in Civic is no excuse for violence.

I think someone needs to turn on their sarcasm detectors.

Enough said, injuries of this nature usually indicate a king hit that the victim wasn’t expecting.

I think most people would expect to see a custodial sentence.
