Icicle weather!

Yesterday morning shocked everyone I think by getting down to -6 degrees.

As I can’t recall the last time I saw icicles I thought it worthy of taking a picture.

Today the Bureau forecasts a whole 12 degrees.

But with the 10.24am update registering a mere 1 degree I’m having my doubts about getting there.

So much for that warm dry winter we were afeared of.

Our friends at PRIME news reported it was the coldest day in Canberra in 43 years..
It got to 2.6 degrees at Tuggeranong according to the BOM.

I think what was said was that these were the coldest June temperatures – the 4.1 in Canberra was the coldest June day in 43 years, and the 2.6 was the coldest June day temperature for Tuggeranong ever recorded.

Either way, it was a damn cold day.

farnakler: The literal reason was fear of naval bombardment… not so much a concern now as it was 100 years ago…

Then it must be true.

That has to be a crock. We had a day two years ago where we didn’t get above 0°C until after midday and I don’t think it made it past 1°C. That said, I’m sure Prime put a bit more research into their claim than I just did, haha.

They said the same thing on WIN and the ABC.

At least the ice is rock hard at the moment. Makes for some awesome hockey.

Bring it on! Winter’s supposed to be cold. I love it!

It’s days like this you have to wonder why the founders of Canberra didn’t found it at the mouth of the Clyde river!!!

FARnarKler. Imagine a huge Bateman’s Bay. It’s bad enough in small doses.

Surely there is nowhere colder in Canberra than the Calwell netball courts at 9am on Saturday mornings?

AGREED!

(I live about 400m away. I understand.)

According to The Bureau we reached a toasty warm top of 4.1 degrees at 2:33pm (I doubt it will go any higher at this point).

And I was wondering weather to rug my horse today. Its literally like a fridge out there!!!

It is much colder here – they have similar (or lower) masimums to us, but we have lower minumum temps. They hardly ever get a frost in Hobart, altho a short drive up the mountain has snow.

I was out in a paddock past Gunning on Wednesday. Do you know why they put the wind turbines out that way? Cos it’s bloody windy all day.

I had full thermal high vis coat on with thermal beany, thermal gloves, rain hood over the beany and I was shaking in my boots. Took me the next 24 hours to defrost.

(BlueMonday, I lived in Tassy many years ago and I tell you – it’s colder here).

I’d much rather have this weather and this time of year than the hated summer silly season with stifling hot temperatures, bushfires, cricket and Claytons radio and television with non-ratings and everybody on holidays.

Lunchtime exercise in 2 degree weather? Not a good idea…

Snow, damnit, snow!
That way, at least the bitter cold will be worth it.

Nice shot jb.

There was a good 5mm of ice covering my bird bath yesterday which was still there at lunchtime!

Same here. Every morning I measure the thickness of the ice to determine whether I should cycle into work. Solid ice = no-bloody-way.

I get excited about it – can’t wait until it snows in the day. My QLD relatives think its crazy living here and then complain about having to wear a jumper when its 20 degrees in their house??

That’s the one. Cheers Deck

Just trying to remember the name of that New Zealand brand that specialises in warm cycle gear [/doublepost]

Ground Effect. Works well in -5 degrees. I didn’t need a thermal or anything underneath.

It’s currently 1.6 toasty degrees out here at Jerra…

There is still ice on my front step now.

They over heat the buses here anyway – everyone is dressed in 6 layers for standing around at the busstop for 10 minutes, then you have to get onto the bus that is heated up like your loungeroom.

Hats off to you Danman. I couldn’t find my little silk balaclava that fits nicely under my helmet, so I took the motorbike today. I confess there may have been a part of me that didn’t want to look that hard.

I rode 16km in minus 5 – it was fun – as long as you have the right gear…

Its easier to stay warm than it is to stay cold in Summer.

My bottle of water didnt appreciate it though – ice on the inside by mitchell.

good old climate change and global warming. so much for the warm winter, as jb said.

Must be fun for bus users in Belconnen, sitting in the cold to catch a bus & then some of the heaters in the newer buses fail & it is colder in the bus then outside.

I’m with Thumper. I love it. If I could move to Tasmania at this point, I would.

I got up at 4am yesterday morning to go to work.

…Yeah winter is a bullshit.
