By committing $20 million to pipe water from the Wingecarribbee reservoir to Goulburn, NSW Premier Morris Iemma has pulled the plug on Peter Debnam’s plan to drain Canberra’s water supply.

It also undermines the federal move to seize control of Googong, since the rationale of quenching Goulburn’s thirst is now gone.

Should have been done years ago. It’s a sign of an incumbent desperate for re-election that it is announced only now.

It’s a great idea, but too little too late. Clearly Iemma is trying to buy votes in Goulburn and with NSW sliding into recession – where the hell is he going to get the money – methinks some of his public servants are about to get wacked!

At first glance this seems a good solution – politically and planning-wise.
Goulburn’s been on Stage 5 for more than 2 years now. Plus the resentment and distrust the farmers have for the Sydney Catchment Authority is intense. They have no control over any of the water that falls on their land – the whole region suffers while Sydeny continues to consume all their water.
