ACT Policing has expressed outrage over the stupidity of two drivers who were caught drink driving last night (November 6).
Around 8.40pm, police stopped a blue Mazda 6 sedan while conducting random breath testing on Caswell Drive, Aranda. The driver, a 22-year-old Kambah man, returned a Blood Alcohol Concentration (AC) reading of 0.079. He will be summonsed to face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date for drink-driving.
Around 9.40pm, police stopped the same Mazda 6 on Caswell Drive in Aranda. The driver, a 21-year-old man from Narrabundah, returned a positive roadside screening test, and was taken to Belconnen Police Station. He returned a positive BAC reading of 0.063. As the holder of an international driver’s licence, he was subject to a zero alcohol content limit, and was issued with an Immediate Suspension Notice.
He was taken to the ACT Watch House, where he was charged with drink-driving. He will face the ACT Magistrates Court on November 15.
Officer-in-Charge of Traffic Operations Sergeant Rod Anderson said the message does not seem to be getting through to some Canberra motorists and it is clear these drivers have a complete disregard for other road users.
“Despite continued warnings and public awareness campaigns by ACT Policing, some drivers are continuing to ignore our messages,” Sergeant Anderson said.
“In this case both men ignored advice by police by driving the Mazda after the first driver had been caught drink driving.”
“It’s appalling that these two drink drivers have shown such disregard for the law and are clearly willing to put not only their own lives at risk but also those of their passenger and other road users.
“If you breach the road rules and place your own life or the lives of others in danger, we will catch you.”
ACT Policing is targeting alcohol and drug impaired driving over the next three months as part of its multi-agency road safety strategy.
