No 10 and a bus stop

See Rob1936’s excellent ‘Jon Stanhope’s Phony Support for Heritage‘ detailing Stanhope’s and his absurd Heritage advisor’s current dumping of horrible recycled concrete bus shelters on the heritage-listed streets of old Ainslie.

It’s interesting to read Stanhope’s 2007 media release in which he announced a new era of shiny attractive ‘state of the art’ bus shelters http://www.chiefminister.act.gov.au/media.php?v=5973&m=50&s=4. Odd that he forgot to mention that part of the deal was that ugly old concrete monsters would be dumped on the streets of Canberra’s heritage precincts.

Stanhope’s government by the way has said that constructing the conrete and plastic horrors in front of pre-war houses is ok because there are already four of them in the Wakefield Gardens Heritage Precinct. In fact one of those, in front of the shops is due to be replaced by one of the steel and glass jobs. Command of detail has never been this government’s strong point.

Readers may enjoy some pictures of what heritage sites would like like if the remit of Stanhope and Zatschler extended beyond our funny little territory:

I don’t think they are a canberra invention. There used to be one at a Sydney beach set up with toilets inside.

Looks like they are digging up all of the old style bus shelters along Northbourne ave – obviously the lure of advertising revenue form the new style bus shelters is too much

I once saw a Canberra-style round concrete bus stop in the backstreets of Jindabyne. To be honest it did strike me as a bit odd, but I was happy to see ACT know-how being exported.

Put one smack bang in front of one of Stanhope’s favourite pieces of that waste-of-money-called-public-art. At least the public will have something to look at while waiting.

heck they should ban those ugly blue/orange and green/orange/white boxes driving around our streets too.

Shameless bastards!!!!

Those shelters are just as much a part of the ACT’s heritage as your house. You live in a heritage precinct. Guess where all the heritage ends up?

+1

suttorbarb, you might find it interesting to do a course on heritage conservation, interpretation etc and get yourself a bit of consciousness-raising – you’d be unlikely to post this topic the way you have, if you were versed in heritage practice. The concrete bus shelters are fantastic and I believe they are Canberran in origin. And aesthetically they were waaaaay ahead of their time – check out myplasticheart.com for just how up-to-date they are …
Cheers

Cool story, Bro!

Methinks someone is confusing aesthetics and heritage value.
