ActewAGL have announced they’ve build a compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station for anyone who wants to bring a CNG fuelled vehicle to Canberra:

The CNG refuelling station, an investment of over one million dollars, is the first of its kind in Canberra and offers the local transport industry the opportunity to consider CNG fuelled vehicles as a viable option.

ActewAGL Manager Gas Networks Macleay Connelly said, “While natural gas is commonly used in Australia to heat homes, generate electricity and power industrial facilities, it is also a realistic alternative to conventional petrol and diesel as a road transport fuel.

“CNG offers a range of benefits, including being a cost-effective fuel alternative, provides high vehicle efficiency, is a safe transport fuel and is more environmentally friendly.

Working there’s going to be a cushy gig until the first vehicles arrive.

I have been working towards converting my vehicles to run dual fuel petrol and cng, currently my vehicle is being converted, i have a fuel maker c3 compressor that i will be using till they introduce filling stations in goulburn nsw, its been a ong term dream finally coming to fruition. Wish i done it sooner but had too many other projects.

I hope there will be plenty more refilling stations around

I’m looking at getting the new Mercedes Sprinter CNG van

and before anyone considers a ‘homebrew’ system, CNG cylinders are designed/required to take much higher pressure than LPG.

I was referring go the filling system being home brew, not the tank. Not that I am suggesting it either way. Air compressors are not designed to run explosive gasses.

So if this is the first CNG refilling station in Canberra, where have ACTION been sourcing their fuel from for the past few years?

Or is this the first ‘public’ station?

It’s neither of the above – there has been a CNG refilling station in Fyshwick for at least 6 years.

Perhaps it’s ActewAGL’s first station, but it’s definitely not the first station in Canberra.

yep, can go steel, composte, the composites are much lighter, require more frequent testing.

Can you run aa LPG converted car on CNG?

No. LPG is stored as liquid. CNG as a gas. They use different tanks. Take a look at wikipedia:

yes you can, you must change the tanks, lineS AND INSTALL cng ones, the under bonnet system is identical, there is an additional regulator, different tanks and lines filling receptacle.

So if this is the first CNG refilling station in Canberra, where have ACTION been sourcing their fuel from for the past few years?

Or is this the first ‘public’ station?

Once upon a time there was talk of being able to buy household size compressors so cars could be filled at home making owning one equal to an electric car for convenience. I wonder what happened to that idea?

I read some stuff on the intarwebz about people rigging up “homebrew” CNG filling systems in their sheds using the natural gas mains and a slightly modified air compressor…

Not exactly legal, since the chances of blowing your self up are high.

is 100 percent legal, you can buy a fuelmaker c3, its a home refuelling appliance fit for purpose that ties into your household natural supply. there is the phill unit and the fuel maker fm4. i had no other choice but to run a home refuelling appliance as there are no refuelling stations in goulburn yet. 🙁
