If you go down to Parliament today...

…you’d better drive the other way.

Back in February I attended a Senate Estimates Committee hearing where bollards and parking were discussed. As well as these fascinating topics, I vaguely remember the possibility of Parliament Dr becoming one way being mooted.

Well from 6.30 this morning it’s happened. You may now only drive around Parliament House in an anticlockwise direction, ensuring that you pass at least one entrance you don’t want to be at each day. However, you can do it 10km/h faster than you have been able to for the past year or so.

I’m not sure if this measure is a security one or more to do with the lack of space on the road caused by people stopping because they haven’t been able to meet people up near the entrances since the bollards were installed.

For those who are utterly confused, this handy map has been appearing in the Canberra Times for the past fortnight. Print, cutout and keep if you think you might get lost.

It can be a dragway actually. The AFP officers at parliament house cannot breath test, pull you over, do radar. They cant do anything since they are only there strictly for protection. THEY ARE NOT SWORN POLICE OFFICERS. Go crazy…

maybe they changed the straight line dragway concept to more of a street race meet.

Imagine all those Excels lined up with their rubber bands all wound up, hee hee.

Whenever I delivered safe hand material to PH I used to go that way anyway – from civic to commonwealth ave up – turn right – go to ministerial entry – past bollards – then when I left it was via kings ave but I think that had more to do with it no tbeing the direct way back to work. PS has anyone seen that bollard movie clip thats getting around the internet lately ? It demonstrates how a pantec ends up after runnung into a bollard at quite a pace.

I thought the dragway was supposed to be straight…?

Maybe terrorists can’t drive in an anti-clockwise direction, so this is how Parliament House plans to foil any possibility of attack?
