Illegal Labor adverts ...the hidden Labor flyer

Just found a postcard in my letterbox from the www.realzed.com – Anti Zed Seselja….purporting to be apolitical, but no reference to the fact that it comes from The Labor Party, and the website belongs to ACT Labor and Elias Hajid….How stupid do you people think we are?

Canberra is too smart for stupid political stunts like this – stop it and tell us the truth about what your party is going to actually do if you win the election!

[Ed. check the very fine print on it. All political advertising has to disclose who its authorised by]

Wouldn’t mind betting it pushes the limit on minimum print size, but haven’t got time to look up the regs on that right now…

I’ve looked through legislation and the candidate handbook – there is nothing specifying minimum requirements as to legibility of an authorising statement.
http://elections.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0020/7931/Candidates_information_2012.pdf

You might be able to contest such an implementation on the grounds of reasonableness. But I think chalk this one up as:
1/ another example of inadequately drafted legislation
2/ the ALP being willing to push the requirements to the limit, and thereby giving the impression that they are trying to hide themselves as the source of the material.

For mine, it’s clear that the Liberals’ whole campaign is premised on a dishonest portrait of what was actually implemented. The Labor machine should have been entirely comfortable with standing behind their decision to implement it, and calmly explained the reality to voters instead of jumping into panic/negative campaign mode.

As I explained to Matt Watts this morning, the Liberals’ use of the Quinlan Report table (which was not adopted) in their brochures is equivalent to putting out a leaflet with a map from a report of possible road route options and screaming “Look they are going to build a road through your suburb!!!!” when the government had actually resolved to build said road on one of the other proposed routes. (The example I gave was saying the GDE was going west of the stadium, but that isn’t really relevant.)

It perhaps would also be like me leafleting everywhere saying “Look Tio Faulkner from Zed’s office did campaigning for the Liberals while on taxpayer wages!” even though Zed has subsequently satisfied the Clerk of the Assembly he didn’t, even though his attention to paperwork was woefully inadequate.

In fact, a person could easily put together a leaflet of newspaper headlines from the last four years purporting to demonstrate seriously inadequate management in the Liberal leader’s office, and it still wouldn’t measure up (down?) to the dishonesty of the Liberal rates campaign.

But there are a few days left, and the Liberals’ house of cards campaign is already falling down, with several economics academics with no pecuniary interest coming out to call “Shenanigans!” on the Liberals. [South Park reference]

Thanks Al, but I can hardly let that go without a comment 🙂

Nobody from the Greens or the ALP can explain how, based in today’s dollar terms, one can remove almost $350 million of taxes and replace that income from the rates system without the average increase being the equivalent of a tripling of rates.

Of course, it is entirely possible there are some secret ALP/Green spending cuts on their way; that’s the only way you could afford to replace the stamp duty without rates tripling on average. I’m not suggesting that is the case, of course, but I’m merely pointing out the economic realities of the situation: the money needs to come from somewhere.

I should also point out that Ben Phillips and Alan Duncan in this morning’s Crimes contend that rates would need to “increase heavily”, yet nobody from the ALP or the Greens can inform us of what that figure would be in today’s dollar terms. The ALP and Greens say the Libs are wrong about the rates tripling, yet won’t say how much they will increase in today’s dollar terms.

Whether you agree or disagree with the policy, why shouldn’t there be some transparency here?

And it’s an interesting situation I have to contend with. I have some from the Left claiming our adverts are lies, and others from the Left accepting rates will triple but that’s a good thing in the long term so we should get behind it.

Finally, Al stated this morning and again in his post that the option quoted by the Libs was one of several. Yes, that’s right; the proposal to increase rates in order to remove stamp duty was adopted by the ALP government and supported by the Greens. The only difference is that since the Libs have been educating the public about the government’s plans, the figure of twenty years has come out rather than the review’s ten years. It is false of Al to claim we cherry-picked one of many options presented to government that wasn’t adopted, because we were referred to that by Minister Barr during Estimates!

I’m more than happy to have a discussion about this topic. Let’s get the info out there, so Canberrans can make up their minds. I don’t see why the Left should be fearful of being honest with the public. We’re using today’s dollar terms, so it shouldn’t be too hard to explain to what extent rates will increase.

And as for the OP, these sorts of campaigns seem to appear each election. I’m not overly happy with the situation, but Labor are free to advertise “Labor + Greens = No Stamp Duty” if they wish.

What’s that now CSRI? Three rebukes against alleged liberal posters.

As well as his own anti liberal threads – like the “making friends and influencing people” one started a few days ago.

And my anti labor threads like the one on Karl maftoum. You seem to work yourself into a lather every time you read one of my posts and have to jump in, boots and all, to have a shot at me. Get help.

Wow. Touchy! If you don’t like being outed as a hypocrite, don’t act like one.

Also, don’t go crying when people “have a shot” at you, when that’s what you do to others in the vast majority of your posts.

I do not know the word to describe someone who is hypocritically calling someone else a hypocrit – but I am sure it describes you to a T
I have gone back looking through the threads you have created on RiotAct and there is not one, not a single one.

I have started threads bagging Liberals and bagging Labor, I have started many that have nothing to do with politics – whereas, all you do is jump on this site and bitch and moan about the ALP and work yourself into a tizz when you see one of my posts – I guess I should be flattered…

Yes. Be flattered. You should know that I sustain myself on seeing you whine any time someone criticises you. Your sooky tears nourish me.

Stop, seriously just stop. Your obsession with me is getting embarrassing. It is really bordering on pathetic. I don’t know what I have done to cause this pathological hatred you have for me. I have differences of opinion with a lot of posters on this site, but I also often agree with the same people on different topics, I have even +1’d some of your comments.

In all sincerity – have I wronged you in some way in the real world, or do you just get some perverse satisfaction from all this?

How is a response to you addressing something to me, an obsession?

There is a difference between having a differing opinion, and acting like a jerk. You come in here regularly and slag off people you don’t agree with, or people you think are stupid. You inject yourself into conversations to insult and belittle others. You’ve done it to me, and to many, many others. And when you get a little bit of your own medicine you act super sensitive and make out as though you’ve no idea why people might do it to you.

You are very welcome to share your opinion and the way in which it differs, and I’ve appreciated that times you’ve done so without acting like an arrogant prick. It’s just a shame that those instances are not the majority of your posts.

Look, you seem to be the only one who has such a problem with me. I think that says it all. This obsession of yours is boring me, I can’t imagine how much it is boring everyone else.

If you really have that little to do with your time, perhaps you might like to get a pen pal? I think US prisons have a scheme where you can write to inmates – perhaps you can try that?

enough now kiddies. back on topic please

I thought the advert was missing the authorised by statement too, and tweeted Elias Hallaj about it on Thursday – https://twitter.com/pirate_taco/status/256135480251404288

Turned out I was wrong, as was the OP in this thread, and it did have the statement, but I don’t think it would be possible to make the statement any less visible, with the tiny text in an odd position with dark grey on black.
Of course it should seem obvious that Labor were behind the flyer from its content, but why the attempt at hiding the statement?

The Liberals “Triple your rates” and the Labor “real Zed” attacks are a definite low point in this campaign. I hope the partisan mud slinging doesn’t get worse over the next week.

One candidate may have had an issue with my daughter’s attitude towards politicians when he door knocked last week. Apparently, when asked about whether she would pass on some advertising material, “whatevs” wasn’t a good answer. Similarly, “nice umbrella” got a weird look from the bloke carrying the umbrella with pink dots.

I haven’t heard any political doorknockers at my front door for weeks – not since I installed an electrical cut-off switch on the front door bell to save electricity, on the good advice of Katy Gallagher.

Mine went straight in the recycling.

Because ACT Labor keep getting voted in to lead the ACT at every election (no matter how badly they’ve performed, or how dodgy they’ve been in the previous three/four years!), is it really any wonder that they’d treat ACT voters as if they stupid?

One could argue it’s because ACT voters would have to be even more stupid to vote in liberals…

That just about nails it.

The different coloured signs thing is a big mistake for the labor candidates trying to hide the fact that they are labor candidates, it has happened at all other recent state and territory elections. The problem is here in the ACT we use the haire Clarke system so candidates are listed on ballot paper under party, unlike in other states where each party only runs one candidate per electorate (other than tas).

In other states it would have

Andrew Barr (alp)

Where in the act it has

Alp Canberra
Andrew Barr
Others

This is a mistake and it has been made because labor are using someone from NSW to run the campaign who doesn’t understand all the finer nuances of the haire Clarke.

We assumed it was deliberate – trying to limit the competition’s ability to stand out. Don’t think it has worked.

And my anti labor threads like the one on Karl maftoum. You seem to work yourself into a lather every time you read one of my posts and have to jump in, boots and all, to have a shot at me. Get help.

Yeah I got something like this in the mail today. Only it had in big black and red font; ALP + GREENs = TRIPLE YOUR RATES ..

No mention of the Libs or Zed or who to vote for.

Build a bridge dude .. or find something worthwhile to moan about.

purporting to be apolitical

No, it doesn’t. Would you like to plead guilty to stupidity, hysteria or dishonesty?

but no reference to the fact that it comes from The Labor Party, and the website belongs to ACT Labor and Elias Hajid

Apart from the text that says ‘Authorised by E Hallaj for the ACT Labor Party’, you mean?

How stupid do you people think we are?

You in particular, or Liberal party voters generally?

What about all the new Labor recruits with ORANGE signs around the place?? Seems to be a deliberate tactic to make them look like independents, which is at least what I thought until I started looking a few of them up – Meeeeegan Fitzharris, for example.

Ha ha not to mention that Andrew Barr has chosen a GREEN background in strategic locations in the Green-friendly parts of the inner north ……

Unfortunately you will probably stick around.

I got the same one and it is so incredibly negative and being a federal public servant I can see that these is focused on federal politics more than local, do they really think people are that dumb? Im pretty sure its not Zed who is cutting jobs from the federal public service, think that is actually the Federal Labor Party but they seem to be scared and trying to trick us with stuff like this…… only one thing annoys me more than so much money wasted on political advertising, and that is when they use the political advertising to try and trick people….. why are they assuming we are stupid?

You do realise that we an ACT Public Service that is the resposibility of the ACT government. Therefore I would say that they are referring to Zed cutting ACT public service jobs if elected.

I for one can’t wait for the concerned citizens who appear to be posing as ‘party hacks’ do likewise.

I haven’t been keeping count but I think there may have been more than that – a couple today and one the other day when a hack joined RA to post incorrect information and abuse me after one of my posts.

I also called out a newbie for being an advocate for the AMP. If I see labor/green hacks doing the same thing, I’ll call them on that too.

That it has been mainly Liberal supporters doing it is hardly my fault, if I see it I will call it.

I have also criticsed Labor hacks for making stupid, infantile comments about Liberal candidates – there was one around two weeks ago in a thread about Alistair Coe, the man I would most like to see lose his seat, but called them on it nonetheless.

stop being ridiculous, I received one too, it was obvious who it was from, had authorisation as required, get back to your Liberal campaign and stop posing as a concerned citizen

I assumed that was trying to piggy back off the anti work choices campaign. At least, I think that was the orange one?

Is orange the internationally accepted colour for independent candidates or something? How does that work in the Basque regions?

If you think its noncompliant, give it a check against either of these two references, which are provided courtesy of your friends at Elections ACT.

If it’s the one I got in the mail a few days ago, you’ll find the authorisation in very very teensy tiny white writing running up the ‘left’ hand edge of one side.

Whilst I haven’t seen the flyer, (I tend to chuck such things in the bin as soon as I get them) not every piece of advertising material is actually official and actually comes from the party it suppose to represent. Sometimes it comes from a party loyalist who wants to help a party along. Sometimes the really bad ones are actually made by supporters of the party which is being “trashed” to make it look like an opposing party has release “a very low blow”.

There was a case up in Sydney a few years ago when this happened. I do believe there it was a couple of “helpful spouses” who decided to release pamphlets.

you get what you vote for

I’ve got one too. It does have an authorisation statement but crikey it’s well hidden. It’s sideways at the top left in the black on one side. Maybe 4pt text?

Wouldn’t mind betting it pushes the limit on minimum print size, but haven’t got time to look up the regs on that right now…

“………..why are they assuming we are stupid?”

Before everyone goes nuts, best that we see a copy of this supposed leaflet. At the moment we only have the OP’s word on this and like 99% of people, they probably just missed the fine print.

Ahem…………’as if they ARE stupid?’

Its a good scare campaign, I think labor are a little scared and hoping to do something to counter the rates campaign. I would have thought a good postcard describing exactly how they are going to get $520 million from rates without tripling rates would work better

how are they getting away with not authorizing it?

Labor’s got 11 years of experience in disobeying the law.
