The Sydney Morning Herald has the news that a group of illegal Thai sex workers have been caught by Immigrations raids on two Canberra brothels in Fyshwick.

A departmental spokesman said three of the women had been taken to Villawood detention centre in NSW, pending their removal from Australia.

Another two Thai women found working at nearby brothel were also questioned about their visa status.

One was granted a bridging visa and the other was issued with a notice of intention to cancel her visa.

Investigations into how the women came to be working illegally in the Canberra brothels are continuing.

Nice to see the ACT’s inspection system remains on top of the industry…

“The bridging visa may well have been so that she can give evidence.”

That would be a Criminal Justice Visa.

The fact we are even discussing this proves this story is primarily about visa issues.

Who bust them, and are they paying for the repairs?

I wonder which is worse – a brothel, or Villawood where the ladies were subsequently sent by the Govt.

One lady was granted a bridging Visa so it would seem she was content to stay.”

Once more for the dummies, there’s absolutely no evidence of anything but people breaching visa conditions. This ‘enslavement, trafficking’ stuff is baseless nonsense. Your assumption that women from Thailand are incapable of finding themselves a job in the sex industry (without being forced into it) is ludicrous. I’d suggest having a chat with anyone who’s actually worked for immigration.

who cares!! let the hoes work!

However they ended up there, being an illegal in a brothel is not a good place to be. These wome would have had noone to go to if they were not being treated well.

“Not ‘Illegal Sex’ – ‘Illegal immigration’.

I’m sure its much sexier than an illegal barista or fruit picker, but on face value there appears to be no sexual enslavement or people trafficking.”

I’d say it’s unlikely that these women funded their own fares to Australia, got through Immigration, and set themselves up in work. If they did, surrrrrrre.

Almost certainly paying off a very hefty fee to organised crime. That’s actually enslavement. I’d say these women were more than likely trafficked.

Seems to me that the issue of illegal immigrants being paid below a fair wage is not limited to the sex industry.

I hope they were cheaper…

It’s not a happy ending for these ladies.

I await Fiona Patten’s comment: she insisted not so long ago that, with brothels legalised, there would be no incentive for illegal sex trade activities in Canberra …
