Images of Canberra - An exercise in futility on Kings Avenue Bridge

On the gallery side of Kings Avenue Bridge is one of those paths that get worn by people rather than plans. Officialdom seems not to approve, but despite two fences and a sign the public would appear to be undeterred.

Ahh the memories of lunchtime runs.

By the time I got there I was absolutely rooted, so a quick dash up the hill will always be the option. I like the earlier comment about the set of stairs going straight up to the Avenue…

Any beaurecrats wishing to maintain their stance might want to try running around the lake at lunchtime from Russell Offices, via commonwealth avenue bridge.

its not the eyesore element, its the fact that people wont walk where the paths are located, because the paths are located in a stupid place.

But you are right, its probably one of those NCA/local gummint issues.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the reason this eyesore isn’t fixed is because of something stupid like the bridge belongs to NCA but the ‘garden’ beside it belongs to the ACT Govt, and they’re fighting about who should foot the bill to repair it or install steps.

an escalator would be the most fitting option – now that would provide a sensible enough excuse to write to the local Member…

When i lived on that side of town i used to walk around teh lake, and use that illegal path to get to Kings Avenue. It saves a 250 metre diversion along a lovely curving path.

There are two major problems with the design of that area for pedestrians: 1 – the road is dangerous to cross and there is no pedestrian crossing. 2 – people need to access the kings avenue bridge and they cant, except by crossing the road.

both these problems coudl be resolved by building a set of stairs under the bridge where the bike path by the lake currently runs. there is plenty of room.

The government should really make a decision. Install something there, either land mines or stairs.

If I wanted to stop people walking down there I would put Jon Stanhope’s office there.

if the government really wanted t ostop people from walking down there they’d plant something prickly, like blackberries.

Some clever dick had written a message on the sign at the top of this saying “some stairs please!”. The graffiti was removed. We can thank the NCA for this stupidity.

Looks much steeper from the other end
