Images of Canberra - Canberra Labor Club - keeping it classy?

I spied the outside of the Labor Club while in Belconnen on the weekend, frankly I was astonished.

With the lack of good bars in Belconnen (honourable exception being the Pot Belly) does keeping up appearances cease to matter?

Why hasn’t the strip of land between red rooster or whatever it is nowadays and the water police station been built on? A decent architect could transform that area into a really nice waterside walk with nice cafe’s, bars and restaurant. Build it in European style, say Lake Como and you’d have somewhere to stick a big finger up at the smarmy gits in Manuka.

I think Bruce must wear canbruh coloured glasses.

: )

How did I miss this contribution to canbruh culcha! Except (and it’s a small bone to pick) where are the overflowing bins at fadden pines, the dusty, shadeless suburban playgrounds and the graffiti-ed bus shelters along weed lined roads?

Well, the Newcastle song is a classic although I will never love it like I loved Rak off, Normie! although sadly I will probably never hear it again. I look for it everywhere, as it is a part of my 1970s heritage.

*sigh*

However, I suspect that the Canberra song will not achieve quite the same modest success ….

What’s the Canberra song? Pardon my ignorance . . . but I am curious. Is it like the Newcastle song?

Bruce Murray, infamous composer and lyricist of the Canberra song, would enjoy having a bit of a squiz at that I reckon.

“one large tatty suburb” – yup. [ But if you want to ‘live in Canberra’, we all live on shady tree-lined avenues a mere stroll from LBG! er – Not]

I have also heard good things about the Ha Ha Bar. I was supposed to meet some people there last night but we had to call it off in the end.

johnboy, have you been to Ha Ha Bar, down by the lake yet?

No… which lake? And what am I looking for?

Down on Emu Bank, near Wok it Up on Lake Ginninderra… Ha Ha Bar is great, just what Belco needs… They do a great brekkie or lunch, and it’s a bar at night time…

There’s nothing missing from the sign: it’s the ‘berra labor club! Haven’t you ever heard this town called the ‘berra?

I am surprised its not named the ‘Kremlin’ although, it could be worse. It could be full of sleazy white shoe wearing Tories, busted arsed real estate agents, Volvo driving stiffs and all those Freddy Freemasons.

At least it’s consistent – sh1thole on the outside, sh1thole on the inside.

wishuwell: you know, I’d be very surprised if Mr Snow hasn’t already considered, or is still considering, plans for a hotel and/or casino on site.

Captainwhorebags, that gives me an idea. If I ever get to purchase my own airport instead of filling outlying buildings with crappy shops that no-one goes to I’ll build some pockie barns full of hundreds of machines. I wouldn’t have to comply with any state or territory laws (wonder if that means I wouldn’t have to pay gaming tax)and the whole place would feel like some kind of off-shore casino.

They’d sell the building and open a warehouse full of pokies if they could keep the punters coming in.

Two panels off their sign missing? The ‘Can’ bit been gone since I left Belconnen 4 years ago.

I don’t get it.
