On Saturday 08-APR-06 we did the Civic Public Art Walking Tour and lived to tell the tale.

And so, I present to you item # 16, Twilight by Christopher Chapman and Ivan Siebel. You can find it on Ainslie Avenue. You have to hike through the Canberra Centre and up the middle of Ainslie Avenue to get there.

Twilight - by Christopher Chapman and Ivan Siebel

From the guide:

Twilight is an evocative and enigmatic
public art work that exists between
sculpture, architecture, and landscape
design. It may be a memorial, monument
or a meeting place. Its form relates directly
to the symbolism and geometry of
Canberra’s urban plan.

It’s a lonely, brutal, overgrown chunk of concrete marooned in the middle of a dual carriageway. So I think they hit the mark eh?

The artist would have to be very clever indeed to place a block anywhere near Ainslie Avenue that could catch the sun at midnight 🙂

Wonsworld, there’s four concret blocks scattered throughout reading dawn, noon, dusk and midnight. I’m not sure if the artist was that clever, but they may possibly be placed so as to catch the sun or be in shade or have a ladybird land on them at each of those times.

umm… Ok Im not the brightest spark but does anyone want to hazard a guess why a piece of art called “twillight” has the word “dawn” scribed on the concrete? and as for evocative and enigmatic?? I think its more like crap and crap

this has to be the crappest piece of “public art”. especially the use of plain old street lighting as an artistic medium. i am sure it is very meaningful to the artist, but to me it just says “cheap and ugly”.

i am waiting for the public art tour descrription of the metal tv, coffee table and magazine near the canberra times fountain, or wasn’t that bit of public art included on the tour?

Right in between the flats. Nice place to sit and enjoy the junkies hitting you up for a dolla.

Ainslie Ave and Ballumbir St. City walk is the other side of the Canberra Centre

Yeah, it does look pretty lost and out of place when you drive past.

Always wondered why there was an outdoor entertaining area on the nature strip.

yah, that sort of day.

fixed now.
