On Saturday 08-APR-06 we did the Civic Public Art Walking Tour and lived to tell the tale.

And so, I present to you item # 25, Civic Merry Go round. It’s at the intersection of City Walk and Petrie Plaza.

Civic Merry Go round

The guide says:

The Civic Merry Go Round was originally
located at the St Kilda Esplanade in
Melbourne where it commenced operation
in 1915. It was designed and built by
Herbert Thompson, designer of Australia’s
fi rst successful motor car. At the time
it was described as the largest portable
steam riding gallery and the first made
in Australia.

Not sure if it’s art, but people seem to like it.

They also have a very odd play list – for anybody who knows their musicals, “Two Ladies” from Cabaret isn’t really all that kid-appropriate…

Yes – this one is gorgeous. I knew it came from St Kilda originally, but I didn’t know it was this old. I hope it remains for many decades to come.

Not sure under what arrangements it operates but it must be a licence to print money – we’ve dropped a bundle there with the kids and there’s always a steady stream of riders from what I’ve seen

It is one of the nice “quirky” features of Canberra… we take it for granted but I can not think of many other cities that have a merry go round permanently in the centre of town.
