On Saturday 08-APR-06 we did the Civic Public Art Walking Tour and lived to tell the tale.

And so, I present to you item # 32, The Fourth Pillar, by Neil Roberts. It is in the ACT Magistrates Court.

The Fourth Pillar - by Neil Roberts

The guide says:

Fourth Pillar includes blue neon texts
on each level of the building which can be
read in relation to the law, or in relation to
everyday life. The artist intended that the
artwork would soften the experience for
people visiting this building.

But from the outside of the building it looks a lot like the things they’re putting into the ground for the GDE on Belconnen Way.

Well, a load of something anyway, caf.

It’s a load-bearing sculpture? cool.

A structural engineer friend tells me that without this Fourth Pillar, the cantilevered second floor could well collapse. And with it, presumably, the ACT justice system.

I think there were quite a few things Mr Osbourne didn’t understand!

I still seeing remember Neil on TV while he was being harrased by some idiot during the time when the nude sculpture of the Queen and Prince Phillip was on display beside LBG.

Neil was killed a few years ago while trying to save his dog from being run down by a train near Queanbeyan. R.I.P. Mr Roberts.

He probably thought it was a crack some kind of crack at him!!!

It is however a great piece of art and well worth looking at up close inside.

Neil also made a series of art pieces (An auspisous symbol) which are old exploded footballs mounted in wooden tennis racket presses. An installation of six those pieces lives in the Legislative Assembly, on the wall near Paul Osborne’s office when he was an MLA. he complained in the Assembly that he didn’t understand it.

You make a good point Mr Evil, as the gentlemen from the Chaser have noted in the past, the amount of make-up Ms Robson wears is impressive and must be accepted to give TT a lead over ACA.

A Current Affair a credible news program??? No way: Today Tonight is much better than ACA! 🙂

Maybe it should say, “Warning this is an ACT Court: Many ignorant proles live in this jurisdiction and are likely to buy into that stupid ‘judges are soft on sentencing’ bullshit (you know the kind, who sit around the water cooler at work and talk about A Current Affair as if it were a credible news program)”

I think it says something on the pillar about ‘first offence sentence free’, or ‘do what you like in Canberra as no-one here has the balls to administer justice’
