On Saturday 08-APR-06 we did the Civic Public Art Walking Tour and lived to tell the tale.

And so, I present to you item # 8, Fused Glass by Klaus Moje. It’s inside the Legislative Assembly building but I was able to take this snap from public land in Civic Square.

Fused Glass - by Klaus Moje

I’ll quote from the artist in the walking tour guide.

Colour is used in this work as a universal
language to convey a sense of energy and
force associated with this place of decision
making and to evoke a feeling of optimism
for the future of this community based on
mutual understanding and respect. The
horizontal and vertical rhythm of the design
is meant to project the sense of order and
structure essential in a body such as the
Legislative Assembly.

Now my understanding of semiotics has been condemned by the best, but what I take from the work is confusion, compromise, and gridlock. Oddly enough that works much better for our Legislative Assembly than what the artist says he intended anyway.

Oh I see, and there was I thinking there was some sort of rule about no photography inside the Leg. Ass. building.
Or perhaps JB is banned from entering therein?
-Whatever, ‘confusion, compromise and gridlock’ reads as well this evening as it did this morning!

well you can see it fine from the square, and the sliding doors were working on the day.

My wife came home from the Kingston Markets on the weekend with some coasters that look remarkably like some of those individual panels. She paid about $5 each max – I’m sure every Canberran has been past the coaster stall at least once, it’s in the way of my route to the mulled wine guy.

While I’m sure that the gummnuts paid an exorbitant sum for this work of Super High Impact Tapestry, surely if the public own it, then the public should be allowed access to it and not require any kind of telephoto lens to view it ?

Am I wrong in thinking that it’s publicly owned ?

**Disclaimer**
I am aware the work is not a tapestry. You are indended to read the capital letters; If you made it this far without realising that then areaman I suggest you read it again.

The door was open, I was no more than 10 metres away. But the camera does have a good zoom and shake-supression. I should note that we used two different cameras for the series.

Haha, beautifully expressed, JB! My previous suicidal despair (on hearing Caz’ sad news, other posting) has been lifted by this gem.
By the way, if indeed you took the snap from public land in Civic Sq (presumably through a window or some other crevice in the brickwork), I have to marvel at the quality of both your steady hand and the telephoto lens on the camera…
