Yes it’s true they’re noisy bastards, and destructive given the chance. But there’s something irresistably charismatic about Sulphur Crested Cockatoos. And one of the things I love about living in Canberra is rounding a corner to see them up to their tricks.

If I die one day, I want to come back as a Cockatoo (or a Kea) because their life looks like so much fun. Yeah, they can be destructive bastards, but that’s just part of their appeal.

LOST COCKY: If anyone knows of a stray tame white cocky hanging around anywhere, partic Inner South please write back. He talks, he is quite large and is used to being handled. He was scared by a car while gardening with us last Tuesday, flew into some nearby gummys and we havent seen him since! Fretting+++, particularly with this bad weather, hoping to get him home soon.
PS TOP cocky photo’s

You must have tasty pegs.

JB you are getting a lot of milage out of that camera.

I love the way cockies vandalise the big overhead street lights. I’ve seen them on a few occasions pulling out the rubber seal, allowing the glass/plastic light cover fall to the road. The birds then hang by the rubber strip, flapping about madly. Must be a load of fun.

They make good alarm clocks.

When they had the tennis courts at Campbell resurfaced a couple of years ago they had to chuck pieces of black tubing across the courts (that look like snakes) to stop those cockies from chewing on the synthetic grass.

i read once that the aboriginals believe that cockies are the spirits of naughty boys.

when i lived in campbell i used to watch them fly squawkingly one way in the am and in the arvo they would come back squawking. they kept pretty regular hours.

Have to agree about the Kea. I did the Milford Track earlier this year and the Keas were a major pest at the lodges. They’d learned how to open the doors to the rooms and had given a couple of them a great going over looking for food. Their size can be a bit intimidating when trying to move them along as well!

they are beautiful and fun birds, but for sheer humour and destructive capability you cannot go past the Kea (the meat eating NZ parrot that lives in the snow and loves to pull Range Rovers apart in the ski fields)

Beautiful piccies Johnboy 🙂
