Pommy Bastard has continued his landscape series with this one he’s sent in with the following note:

“Hi mate, took this shot along “Fairlight road” at the end of Sunday’s showers.”

To forestall the outcry; clicking on the image will give you a larger version.

So all of this is over Granny.

That makes sense.

Sh1t, dex, I hadn’t even seen that one. That’s appalling.

With the shooters thread happening after that, it’s no wonder Granny pulled up stumps.

Don’t limit your self to the one thread. You will find some good stuff in this one too.

I would say granny had a boot full here first.

I found the shooters thread…. but it’s one of those long ones that doesn’t work with OE! So the original article is gone. Thwarted. The comments are there but there’s an awful lot of them and I didn’t get to where the fighting started.

PB has plenty of experience on the other side of the troll bridge.

yes, PB did well. And then posted another picture! Quite classy.

If future trollees respond as calmly as PB did to dexi’s homage, it would be no bad thing.

Where is this fabled Shooters thread? It saw the demise of Granny, the birth of Master Abuser Dexi. Where is it?!

Between a blog and a hard place.

Doesn’t sound pretty, but so far it’s generated all sorts of weirdness. Driving Danman into going overseas, too, apparently.

if you didn’t get sucked in the first time around then don’t go there – it’s not pretty.

Where is this fabled Shooters thread? It saw the demise of Granny, the birth of Master Abuser Dexi. Where is it?!

I think Dexi learned a lot from
PB in the shooters thread and she’s putting that knowledge to good use.

EG – The photos may ‘look like’ sh*te to Dexi, that doesn’t mean they ‘are’ sh*te..

I mean it is all only meaningless ‘labelling’ and if you ‘take all the emotion out of it’ and don’t let the rude comments ‘get to you’ then what’s the problem.

I mean it’s all only Dexi’s opinion, and she is only being crude about the piccies in order to ‘generate a bit of debate’.

I think you have to have waded thru the entire shooters thread to see where Dexi is coming from.

Tickled my fancy anyway!

Ugly photos need love too. 🙂

Dexi, your are simply a douche. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

An angry man? Mayhap ant.

PB – I note with interest that dexi had not bothered to post a comment about either of your other two shots that John Boy put up prior to becoming the Robert Hughes of the RiotAct

Take a deep breath dexi. Then exhale.

Repeat until you feel better, your blood pressure drops and your perspective returns. Perhaps have some chocolate?

But do have a good day. Remember, there are people that care.

shhhhh, nobody say PMS…..

Why thank you, I wish you all the best too.

Its your lack of imagination and understanding of subject matter that affects me profoundly. Regardless of my personal failings I find your view of the world distressing and insulting. I can only hope that you are shot before you get a chance to shoot anymore film. Your photos do nothing to portray the true beauty and diversity of nature.

He’s an angry man, no doubt about it. An amusing one though.

Entertaining! I think what Dexi is so annoyed about, is that the shot appears to have strayed to the right too much. .

It does seem to have affected him/her rather profoundly, does it not?

Pommy bastard9:46 am 04 Dec 08

Surely they are only a ‘blight” on those who choose to revisit them time and time again? I cannot be held responsible for that.

And to use the term “blight’ with regard to a photo, is somewhat over egging the analogy.

blight
–noun
1. Plant Pathology.
a. the rapid and extensive discoloration, wilting, and death of plant tissues.
b. a disease so characterized.
2. any cause of impairment, destruction, ruin, or frustration: Extravagance was the blight of the family.
3. the state or result of being blighted or deteriorated; dilapidation; decay: urban blight.
–verb (used with object)
4. to cause to wither or decay; blast: Frost blighted the crops.
5. to destroy; ruin; frustrate: Illness blighted his hopes.
–verb (used without object)
6. to suffer blight.

Entertaining! I think what Dexi is so annoyed about, is that the shot appears to have strayed to the right too much. Having the dramatic doughnut of cloud in the centre of the shot, or featured more clearly, is probably what he’s suggesting (other than the other suggestions about parentage etc).

The slope to the right does make it look crooked, but the line of hills on the horizon shows that it’s level. I think the exposure is good in that it’s dramatic, but perhaps the much under-exposure looks a bit forced when you look at the paddock etc. I often do the under-exposure thing to intensify sunsets, but only have a scrap of earth/mtns in the bottom of the shot, for reference.

Why let spelling stand in the way of ignorance and bigotry. Sell your camera bastard. Your photos are a blight on society.

dexi said :

People like PB should not be aloud to own a camera.

If he had a quieter camera, that’d help him compose his shots better? 🙂

PB, I don’t care what dexi thinks – I still like your photos.

Another multi-level justification of crap photos, I couldn’t be bothered reading.

Berryboy the photo don’t need to be anything to collect abuse. These photo’s just happen to be nothing.

Yes, Dexi has well and truly jumped the shark here.

PB – I’m no art critic but I like what I like. And I like your pics.

Dexi’s comments will only scare people off from posting on RA what they consider to be good pics of Canberra and its peoples. Do the pics posted here really have to be worthy of hanging in the National Gallery?

Pommy bastard7:44 am 04 Dec 08

Thanks to all, much appreciated.

Dexi has raised some photographic issues which I feel I should address.

dexi said :

Once again you have failed to hold your camera level.

The photo was shot using a Manfrotto tripod, which has levels in two planes, therefore the camera was perfectly level. I think you are allowing the hills and valleys to distort your perspective.

Have you heard of Gimp or Photoshop?

The image was composed in Photomatix. It’s actually five exposures shot at 1/500th at f16, and bracketed at 0 -1 -2 +1 +2, then blended. The final image was adjusted for curves and saturation in phoptoshop CS3.

Have you heard of “the thirds rule” or considered how the composition of a photo draws the viewers eye?

Yes, that’s why the intersection of the left vertical, and bottom horizontal, thirds intersect precisely at the suns rays where the “hand of god” effect is at its strongest.

dexi said :

There is no central focus. my eyes bounce all over the image.

But you were just complaining I had not followed the “rule of thirds”?

There is no “central focus” as this is a landscape shot, “central focus” images are used mainly for portraiture or product shots.

The aim of landscape is to entice the eye of the viewer into wandering the image, just as one would when viewing a open view.

The clouds are cut off and so is the the sun.

Unfortunately when shooting landscape one cannot ask the sun or the clouds to kindly fit into ones viewer, one has to shoot what one is given. Shooting the sun would have caused the image to “burn out”, that’ why only the rays were included,(and they were very difficult to meter for.)

Its wishy washy.

No, if anything its overly “strong”, I think I’ll tone down the intensity of the clouds if I decide to work on it further..

Hows the bastard going to improve if he is not challenged. The last photo I saw of his, was horrid. This one shows a little improvement.

Thank you for your advice.

Felix the Cat6:57 am 04 Dec 08

I don’t think PB ever claimed to be a pro photographer. Still waiting to see your photos, Dexi (hope they’re better than your spelling).

fantastic shot. I love the monstrous clouds against the insignificant landscape.

People like PB should not be aloud to own a camera.

If I was looking for a result with vinigar it would be to pour it over his camera.

His photos served with honey is still going to taste like crap.

PB – I love the ‘hand of God’ effect you have caught with the rays. Tick – VG.

Wow. Don’t dexi’s comments reveal much?

dexi: I reckon there are more appropriate ways to pass on constructive criticisms than the path you have chosen.

I always find I get better results with honey than vinegar.

Oh common on the composition pretty crap. There is no central focus. My eyes bounce all over the image. The clouds are cut off and so is the the sun. Its wishy washy. Surely I can be as abusive as I want if it does not meet my opinion of what a landscape photo should be. Hows the bastard going to improve if he is not challenged. The last photo I saw of his, was horrid. This one shows a little improvement.

I guess its how people see things, not what they read into it that matters.

Dexi I think you’re mis-reading the composition

Sorry…..Point, shoot and print does not a good photo make.

Felix the Cat9:04 pm 03 Dec 08

Feel free to post up some of your photos, Dexi.

Another poorly composed photo from the bastard. Once again you have failed to hold your camera level. Are you lazy or just ignorant of production values? Have you heard of Gimp or Photoshop? Have you heard of “the thirds rule” or considered how the composition of a photo draws the viewers eye? Your photography is amateurish, poorly conceived and executed. Point, shoot and print dose not a good photo make . These photos say more about you than they do about Canberra. Don’t quit your day job.

Felix the Cat8:43 pm 03 Dec 08

Where’s Fairlight Rd?

Pommy bastard5:39 pm 03 Dec 08

My thanks to all who have commented, you’re very kind.

PB, all these lovely landscape images are wonderful, and remind me of all the things I like about the ACT and Canberra.

Stunning! Great work.

*Great* shot! (Grey too), but not ‘grea’, sorry PB.

Grea shot PB.

Nice shot indeed
