Kerces has been standing on the edge of the Federal Highway in the dark with a tripod and has sent in this night shot of where the ACT begins.

I find the first sight of the Brindabella’s, gives me that lovely feeling of being home again. It use to be that the signs marked a change in the quality of road surface.

I just got back from 3 weeks in the Carribean and US – and had only 2 days to get back to work…. Drive a hire car down from Mascot last Friday night – I have to say it, there was a mixture of elation and doom on seeing that sign.

Elation to see my dogs, sleep in my bed with my pillow – but doom, knowing that what I just done was as good as it gets for another year or so, and in saying so, knowing that for teh next year, it will be a trough not a peak…

I spose if that sign was not there, there would be seveal landmarks that I would associate this with instead, because as long as you do not see that sign, you are still truly on holidays IMO.

Hehehe when I became an anarchist I thought it was antichrist. What a letdown!!!

Happened to me, too, Danman. I’m eagerly waiting to see what’s beyond “agitator” as it sounds a bit limp, really.

rosebud’s point about the sign meaning holiday over, back to mundane life is a good one. I guess we all have signals like that, that trigger the same thought. For me, it’s staring at the sun-baked runway area just after landing at Sydney airport. Glad to be home, but something is finished as well.

Notorious offended of taking long exposure tripod + wireless shutter release photos at night – taking up to 5 minutes an exposure at times.

Surely if one photo is suspicious then….

How did my status go from veteran rioter to agitator ?

Has it something to do with the good doctor and a flux capacitor ?

Why? What did you do?

Suspicious… I must be a felon then.

Kerces, you’re lucky the plod who took such interest in a bloke cutting his hair in a park didn’t see you. Someone outside, at night, with a camera and tripod? Certainly suspicious.

I’ve always found that sign kind of depressing. When I see it, it usually means ‘holiday over’ and back to work.

Here, Here… I only get to Canberra for 2 weeks out of every year, or so living in the UK.
When I pass it, it normally means I’m on the Highway on a Murrays coach back to Sydney Airport 🙁

I wonder why only some entrances to the ACT have that big important sign on them? I’m pretty sure teh southern entrance doesn’t have one,

The southern entrance at least on the Monaro Highway certainly does have one. It’s about 1km south of the Williamsdale servo, and looks almost identical to the one in Kerces’ photo. We often see tourists parked there getting there photo taken!

Kerces, I’d have thought shorter than 8 secs looking at the distance travelled by the car lights? But I bow to your immediate experience . 😉

Welcome to Canberra. Watch out for the Rioters…

To stop the taggers and vandalism.

WHat about the welcome to Ngunnawal country signs. Anyone know why they have to be 4m in the air?

PB, I think about 8 seconds but I was playing round with the timer between 2s and 13s so I can’t quite be sure. Manual focus and shutter speed, auto everything else and on a tripod cos my hands are damn shaky.

Loitering to commit photography is about right — I drive past this sign and tree a lot in the dark from visiting family and every time I pass it I think I should get a photo of that. So I did.

I always think we should have an ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER sign here.

Or mayhap a “ABANDON ALL SENSE OF EXCITEMENT, ALL YE WHO ENTER HERE…” sign?

Ok. I’m always struck by how untidy the private flats at Starlight look. To totally ignore this and then draw attention to public housing that is halfway into town, shows the same lack of vision and attention to facts.

Or … it shows that other people either don’t drive passed them that often or don’t share you view.

Howver, back to the photo:

I’ve rarely see the Gateway sign at night.

I like it as an entrance.

I always think we should have an ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER sign here.

… and a bloke that stops your car and hands you a complimentary beige cardigan.

but driving into Canberra down Northbourne one gets a sufficient view of the government flats and accommodation to form the opinion that Canberra is full of Bogans, does one not?

Possibly, but they do live in architecturally significant housing.

Dexi, let’s consider your point made and move on eh?

No they see private flats, private house’s, hotels, and buildings first. You could form the opinion Canberra’s full of fat balding bigots with huge mortgages. Try driving out of town and check your rear vision mirror.

Christ, here we go again!

I wonder why only some entrances to the ACT have that big important sign on them? I’m pretty sure teh southern entrance doesn’t have one, and the eastern side certainly doesn’t (from teh Kings Highway). then again, there isn’t one on the western entrances, either (Brindabella Rd, and Namadgi Rd).

Its because the south is full of bogans and its not a good look for the ACT.

That may be true, but driving into Canberra down Northbourne one gets a sufficient view of the government flats and accommodation to form the opinion that Canberra is full of Bogans, does one not?

Its called loitering to commit photography. Nice Pic.

This is the main entrance, as seen by the NCA, and that is why they maintain northbourne Ave and water the nature strip etc, as the ‘gateway to canberra’.

Noice!

Would it be rude to enquire WHY Kerces has been standing on the edge of the Federal Highway in the dark?
